Dont’ Give Up Pietro!!!!

Pietro sta giocando da tempo la sua partita più difficile. L’angioma che lo ha costretto allo stop proprio a pochissimi mesi dai giochi olimpici in Inghilterra è stato curato, non operato visti i rischi enormi, e nell’intervista di qualche settimana fa, uscita su sailtv, ci era sembrato che tutto fosse a posto.

Poi la doccia fredda: qualche giorno fa la Commissione Medico Sportiva del Coni gli ha negato l’idoneità sportiva agonistica ed al momento Pietro non potrà partecipare ai Mondiali 49er di Maggio in Croazia, che sarebbero stati perfetti per la qualificazione olimpica. Pietro ha richiesto, congiuntamente alla FIV, una serie di test approfonditi per dimostrare la propria idoneità all’attività agonistica.

Il cartello perentorio che vedete è opera anch’esso di Bontempelli, è stato condiviso ed a fatto mille volte il giro del web. Pietro è un patrimonio della vela italiana, una persona squisita ed un nostro amico. Vogliamo fargli sapere che anche noi siamo con lui. E che lo aspettiamo, eh se lo aspettiamo….

Sensini e non Pellegrini

In una intervista di ieri sera a SKY SPORT Alessandra Sensini ha ribadito la sua disponibilità ed il suo entusiasmo per essere la porta bandiera alla cerimonia di inaugurazione dei Giochi Olimpici di Londra.

La prescelta dal Coni era stata la Pellegrini, ma la nuotatrice si è un po’ tirata indietro, nonostante ami la ribalta la cerimonia è a poche ore dal suo esordio in vasca e la cosa rischia di disturbare la sua concentrazione che ama gestire in totale privacy.

Noi tifiamo per Alessandra, che è alla sua sesta olimpiade ed è alla ricerca della sua quinta medaglia olimpica.
Regaterà su un campo, Weymouth, abbastanza ventoso e quindi affine al suo stile. Ma non si sa mai, anche ad Atene si allenarono tutti col ventone e poi il Meltemi latitò…

Le sue avversarie avranno spesso 20 anni di meno, e la longevità agonistica di Alessandra ha fatto sì che si trovi a regatare con la terza generazione di tavole olimpiche. Eppure è sempre lì, e se non è una bandiera lei….

Le Classi Olimpiche, ovvero la perfezione applicata allo sport della Vela.

Questo video ci racconta la gioranta di ieri, ma in particolare ci mostra il livello straordinario raggiunto dagli equipaggi impegnati in questa manifestazione.

Su tutto vi segnalo, intorno al 7° 8° minuto la regata dei 49er con un giro di boa dei Neo Zelandesi, dopo la prima poppa, che è da manuale della vela.

Sono immagini che andrebbero proposte nelle scuole vela e che tutti dovrebbero analizzare e studiare, perchè c’è un solo modo per fare le cose… QUESTO…

Per cortesia NO! Già ci hanno deliziato con la MontainBike il KiteSurf mi pare un pò troppo.

Fumata nera ISAF:la riforma elettorale s’incaglia al Council su questioni procedurali. Nel 2012 le votazioni per il Presidente ed i Vicepresidenti si svolgeranno con le regole attuali. Riccardo Simoneschi, membro di diritto dell’ Isaf Classes Committee e delegato italiano nell’ Equipment Committee ha tracciato un consuntivo dell’ISAF Annual Conference di Puerto Rico.

“Il tema di maggior interesse è sicuramente la scelta delle nuove classi olimpiche per Rio 2016” ha dichiarato Simoneschi. “Faccio parte dello specifico “working party”,che ha il compito di formulare i criteri e le modalità degli evaluation trials, cioè il procedimento di valutazione comparativa attraverso il quale saranno scelte le nuove classi olimpiche:skiff femminile, catamarano open e l’evaluation del kiteboard. Un compito molto delicato e di grande responsabilità per gli inevitabili risvolti commerciali che tali decisioni comportano. Un lavoro durato circa un anno, che entra ora nella sua fase applicativa e ha come obbiettivo, dopo avere fissato le caratteristiche tecniche per le tre categorie, l’applicazione di un metodo di giudizio imparziale per i trials che si terranno la prossima primavera. Certo i segnali che sono venuti dal Council di ieri non sono incoraggianti:il presidente ISAF, di fronte alla proposta di scegliere il 29erxx quale skiff femminile senza valutazione comparativa con altre barche presentata dall’Argentina ,dalla Russia e da altre federazioni, ha richiamato i membri al rispetto delle procedure di evaluation già deliberate ed ha dichiarato la submission improcedibile.”

Continuando nella sua analisi, Simoneschi ha aggiunto: “Lavoro più di routine quello dell’ Equipment Committee e dell ISAF Classes Committee. Quest’anno niente di veramente eclatante nelle due agende se non per alcune submissions, tra le quali un inizio di riforma sul criterio di autorizzazione ad assegnare i titoli mondiali alle classi riconosciute ed una rinnovata spinta verso una World Cup dai criteri più radicali e dalla gestione più indipendente, affidata a professionisti esterni, secondo le richieste avanzate dalla Olympic Classes Commission. Un anno tranquillo in attesa del prossimo, fine di quadriennio e quindi anno di votazioni sia per la Presidenza che per l’Executive ed i Committee: per cui tutti coperti e nessuno che prende rischi di scelte magari impopolari. Due, al momento i candidati alla presidenza, l’australiano David Kellet ed il portoricano Eric Tulla. Entrambi volti noti e già Vice presidenti. Al momento e’ difficile fare un pronostico e poi potrebbero esserci candidati dell’ultima ora. Certo che la corsa e’ iniziata.”

“Una nota secondo me positiva e che mi fa particolarmente piacere sta nella coesione e spirito di collaborazione della delegazione italiana che, per quella che e’ la mia esperienza, e’ stata unita ed efficace come mai prima. Segno che anche in questo campo la Federazione Italiana Vela sta facendo grandi miglioramenti” ha concluso Simoneschi.

“Nulla di fatto sulla riforma elettorale. Il Council si è incartato su cavilli procedurali” ha dichiarato il Consigliere Federale Walter Cavallucci rappresentante al Council. “Anche se la sensazione è che forse non ci fosse la volontà politica di portarla in fondo. Quindi le prossime elezioni 2012 si svolgeranno con le attuali regole Per quanto riguarda la scelta dello skiff femminile, la nostra posizione rimane ferma sul preventivo procedimento di evaluation tecnica delle relative proposte. Perciò oggi voteremo contro qualunque submission contraria.”

Il Mid-Year Meeting dell’ISAF si terrà in Italia a Stresa dal 3 al 6 maggio 2012.

Siamo arrivati al primo giorno di finale e le quote del nostro team sono scese. I nostri cavalli su cui puntare sono rimasti solo tre dopo il ritiro per febbre della Sensini.
Giornataccia per Sibello che scala al quarto posto, interlocutoria prestazione per la Conti-Micol che fa un 2 e un male ed è sesta, ottime regate per Negri-Voltolini che con tre prove nei primi dieci salgono al quarto posto. Nel frattempo date un’occhiata al tabellino in foto: sembra l’era coloniale britannica!!! Negli highligths a seguire un’intervista anche a Sibellino ed a Giovanna e Giulia.

Ecco il comunicato della scorsa giornata:

-A relative calm descended on Weymouth Bay this morning, after the battering from the day before. But there was no less tension or aggression in the racing in Day Four of Skandia Sail for Gold, as the fleets moved into the endgame.

The bigger fleets were split into gold and silver fleets for the penultimate two days of racing, before the decisive medal races on Saturday.

In the 470 Men the overnight leaders, Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page (AUS) and the third-placed French team of Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos swopped places, moving around the static, second placed Anton Dahlberg and Sebastian Ostling (SWE). Leboucher and Garos now hold a four point lead from Dahlberg and Ostling, with the Australians another five points adrift.
The Kiwi women, Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie owned the Women’s 470 course today with a superb couple of victories that took them past the British pairing of Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark and into the lead. The Brits had their worst day so far with a 16th and an eighth, but held onto second ahead of the Israelis Gil Cohen and Vered Bouskila.
The Gold 49er fleet managed to get in four races and it was the Australian World Champions, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen who turned on the style with two firsts, a fourth and a sixth to take the overall lead. The overnight leaders, Italy’s Sibello brothers could post nothing better than an eighth and slipped back to fourth. Skandia Team GBR’s John Pink and Rick Peacock held onto second, with France’s Stephane Christidis and Peter Hansen moving up from fifth to third.
In the Laser Men the Gold fleet did two races and Britain’s overnight leader Nick Thompson had a day he will want to forget with a 32nd and 34th to drop all the way back to ninth. It was left to Australia’s World Champion Tom Slingsby to move up to the lead after posting a super consistent 1, 3. Kiwi Andrew Murdoch also had a good day with a first and a fourth and is now just six points behind the leader. Dutchman Rutger van Schaardenburg is in third, another nine points behind.
In the Laser Radials, Ireland’s Annalise Murphy slipped back from her overnight lead to third, after a 13th in the first race, but she wasn’t raising the white flag and came back with a win in the second and final race of the day. It was Evi van Acker who posted the best performance of the leading group to go to the top of the table. ISAF Sailing World Cup leader, the Netherland’s Marit Bouwmeester remains in second, but now only a point off the lead.
It was all change again on the RS:X Mens race course, New Zealand’s Jp Tobin and Dutchman Dorian van Rijsselberge both moved back above overnight leader Nick Dempsey (GBR), who slipped back into third. The leading group have a ten point cushion to fourth placed Przemek Miarczynski (POL).
In the RS:X Women, it was Spain’s Marina Alabau who mastered the tricky conditions, posting a third and a first to slide past Lee Korzits of Israel and into the lead. Alabau now has a four point lead going into the final day ahead of the medal race split. Zofia Klepacka remained in third nine points behind Korzits.
The Women’s Match Racing had a lot of catching up to do after the strong wind and waves curtailed yesterday’s racing. It meant an early start and a late finish. The Gold Group was completed along with the Repecharge Round Robin, and so we know tomorrow’s quarter final pairs. The Gold Group winners, Sally Barkow, Elizabeth Kratizig-Burnham and Alana O’Reilly from the USA will race against Silja Lehtinen, Silja Kanerva and Mikaela Wulff (FIN).
Next up, it will be the second placed team in the Gold Group, Australia’s Nicky Souter, Jessica Eastwell and Lucinda Witty to sail against Claire Leroy, Elodie Bertrand and Marie Riou (FRA). Anna Tunnicliffe, Molly Vendemoer and Debbie Capozzi (USA) were third in the Gold Group and will sail against France’s Anne-claire Le Berre, Alice Ponsar and Myrtille Ponge. And that leaves Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor (GBR) against the Netherlands’ Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes and Merel Witteveen.
The Finn class saw Britain’s triple Olympic gold medallist, Ben Ainslie increase his lead over compatriot Giles Scott to 13 points – despite recording what for Ainslie was an average day’s scores of 1, 6, 4. Scott could only manage a 2, 4 and 9 but that was enough to move him from a tie with third placed Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic to a single point lead.
In the Stars, Brazil’s multiple Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt and his crew Bruno Prada saw their five point lead over Sweden’s Freddy Loof and Max Salminen cut to a single point. Loof and Salminen posted scores of 4, 1 and 2, and Scheidt had to pull out all the stops to win the last race from the charging Swedes and hold onto his overall lead. Poland’s Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki remained steady in third, but 15 points off the lead.
The 2.4mR’s raced first on the Paralympic courses, and the leading pair overnight both had an average day. But it was Damien Seguin (FRA) who got the better of his Dutch rival, Thierry Schmitter to snatch the overall lead, while Paul Tingley had a solid day (3, 4) to move up into third and onto the podium ahead of their final day tomorrow.
The SKUDs and Sonars took their turn on the Paralympic course in the afternoon, and the former in particular had some serious sailing to do to catch up with their schedule. So it was well into the evening by the time the SKUDs completed their third race. It was Australia’s Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch that showed everyone the way home with three straight bullets. They extended their overall lead to four points ahead of Britain’s Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell. Jamie Dunross and Rachael Cox (AUS) remain in third, a further five points behind.
The Sonars also raced three today, and were also out there late – Britain’s John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas didn’t have a particularly good day with a 5, 8, and 1, but they did enough to hold off the Dutch and French, tied in second. Udo Hessels Marcel van Veen and Mischa Rossen are now four points adrift, tied with the French team of Bruno Jourdren, Eric Flageul and Nicolas Vimont Vicary – all to play for on the final day of racing tomorrow on the Paralympic course.-

The forecasters didn’t get the third day of Skandia Sail for Gold wrong, as Weymouth was battered by unseasonably strong wind.
They took on conditions that were definitely ‘top end’. The average wind speed on the breakwater read 25 knots throughout the day, with gusts up to 29 knots. There was damage to boats, broken masts and capsizes, stuff that you rarely see from the top Olympic sailors in the world. And it was the Brits who most relished the conditions, leading five of the 13 fleets as the sun began to set on a still windswept Weymouth Bay.

It was the final day of heats for the 49ers, 470s, RS:X and Laser classes before they are spilt into gold and silver fleets. The 49ers waited till very late in the day in an attempt to equalise the number of races that the two flights had sailed but ultimately failed, leaving some of them with six race results and others with seven. The rules state that they go back to the last time they had an even number of races. And that left Italy’s Sibello Brothers top of the heap, chased by Britain’s John Pink and Rick Peacock, and then Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes.

The RS:X Men also sailed this morning, and got two races in before heading home for an early finish. It was Britain’s Nick Dempsey that cleaned up with a phenomenal two wins, pushing him up from fifth to the top of the leaderboard. New Zealand’s Jp Tobin could only manage a second and a fifth and slipped to second, with yesterday’s star performer, Dutchman Dorian van Rijsselberge holding his third place.

By the afternoon the breeze was reaching its maximum and the RS:X Women had some spectacular sailing. It was Israel’s Lee Korzits that had the best day with a first and a second, moving up from fourth to take the overall lead. Spain’s Marina Alabau was displaced into second, with Poland’s Zofia Klepacka moving up above Alabau’s compatriot, Blanca Machon, and pushing the World Champion down into fourth.

Out on the 470 course they also enjoyed testing but exhilarating conditions. In the Men’s fleet it was the 2010 World Champions, Australians Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page that had a stunning day in the breeze, scoring two bullets and driving straight to the top of the scoreboard. Overnight leaders, Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos (FRA) managed one win and a seventh and dropped to third, also passed by Anton Dahlberg and Sebastian Ostlin (SWE), up to second.

Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (GBR) stayed at the top of the 470 women’s leaderboard with a steady performance, scoring a fifth and sixth place. They have a ten point lead over Israel’s Gil Cohen and Vered Bouskila. The pairing from Israel relished the strong winds picking up just four points with a third and first place. New Zealand’s Jo Alep and Olivia Powrie climb up to third.

The Laser Men sailed two races early, and it was Netherland’s Rutger van Schaardenburg with a first and second, and Britain’s Nick Thompson with a first and third that dominated the racing today – the former moved up from third to second, but Thompson leap-frogged the Dutchman to go from fourth to the overall lead. The current world champion, Tom Slingsby is now in second.

The Laser Radials were out later than most but not as late as they are used to, sailing two races in tough conditions. It was a virtuoso performance from Ireland’s Annalise Murphy, with straight bullets to take the overall lead. ISAF Sailing World Cup leader, the Netherland’s Marit Bouwmeester was her ever-consistent-self in the breeze, adding another second and third (she got the same results yesterday) to her scoreline to hold second place. Overnight leader, Belgium’s Evi van Acker slipped to third.

Star and Finn were again sent out to course foxtrot – over five miles offshore – where there wasn’t just the wind to contend with but a difficult sea state. The result was damage for some, including four of the Stars breaking their masts. None of the leading contenders suffered that fate, Freddy Loof and Max Salminen (SWE) relished the conditions with a 2,1 scoreline and moved up into second place behind double gold and silver Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt and his Brazilian partner Bruno Prada. Poland’s Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki hold third. The race committee decided not to go for a third race due to the amount of kit breakages in the fleet.

Ben Ainslie (GBR) dominated in the Finn again winning both races on the outer race course. With five races now sailed Ainslie has discarded his seventh place, and is counting three firsts and a second. It is becoming a battle of the Brits for the top place in the Finn, as Giles Scott climbed up to second place with a strong performance in the breeze. Scott is now nine points adrift of Ainslie. Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) lies third on equal points to Scott and first day leader Dan Slater (NZL) falls to fourth. The Finns were also sent in after completing just two of their planned three races, due to the strength of the winds and height of the waves.

So far so good for us. The 49er fleet is really competitive. The English team is really strong, they have five different teams who are sailing at a really high level and are pushing the rest of the fleet a lot. I think the Australian guys (Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen) are the other ones to look out for – they are the ones to beat. I am really looking forward to battling it out with them the rest of this week!

We are looking to spend as much time in Weymouth as possible; we will be here throughout the summer. It is important because the conditions change a lot here and the more time I spend here the stronger position I feel I will be in when it comes to our selection.

Malcolm Page (AUS) – 470

The last few regatta’s we competed in we seemed to make a habit of going for it full blow and going into the finals in first place, and then stuffing it up! We are improving everyday here but we just need to keep our form.

The real racing starts tomorrow, I am looking forward to the challenge of the gold fleet, there is nothing like competing against your biggest competitors and not watching them in the other fleets. I think it will make a big difference to the score card.

Blanca Manchon (ESP) – RS:X Women
World Champion
It was really windy in the first race today, almost 30 knots, and for me it wasn’t very good. I had a bad second lap and lost a lot of places so that was disappointing but the last race was better. There was less wind and I finished fourth so I am happy with that. Tomorrow the fleets get divided into gold and silver and of course it is going to be difficult racing – we will just have to wait and see!

This is a really competitive fleet and there are about five girls who are really good and are all able to win here. The Israeli girl (Lee Korzits) is great in the strong winds, so if the conditions continue like this she would be really tough to beat.

Ben Ainslie (GBR) – Finn
Overall Leader and reigning Olympic Champion
It was hard work out there again today with very strong wind conditions on a tricky race course. I come back in from a day like today and my body is aching, but it’s all about testing yourself so it is satisfying to get two good results. I’m definitely better trained compared to last year’s Skandia Sail for Gold, where I’d literally just got back into Finn sailing. We have worked hard technically on the boat and physically on my fitness so it’s good to see that hard work paying off. I am happy with how things have gone so far but there is still a long way to go this week and hopefully the wind dies down a bit so it will be a little bit easier for us all.

Freddy Loof (SWE) – Star�
Second overall
Today we had a good start and sailed well and consistently. It’s rough, tricky and challenging sailing out there but it’s good, I like it. We got it working really well and were fast downwind whereas yesterday we were not so good. I’m really looking forward to tomorrow; Weymouth is an awesome sailing venue to sail at and I prefer it to China, plus it’s much closer to home!

Hannah Stodel (GBR) – Sonar

What a day! It’s been a long day but we are really pleased, we got two firsts which have put us out in front. We’ve had some great racing with two really windy days, there’s been some pretty close racing a few crashes here and there but it’s been good. The aim for the week is to just keep sailing well and put everything we have been training over the winter into practice.

Nick Dempsey (GBR) – RS:X
Overall Leader
It’s been pretty nice conditions, sunny and windy and we had two cracking races this morning. I won them both which is really nice especially after a frustrating day yesterday. The first day was good but yesterday I made three major errors. I want to keep sailing well and get the points back I lost. The conditions have been gorgeous, you couldn’t race in a better place and everyone’s enjoying it and racing really hard. JP Tobin [NZL] and Dorian [NED] have both been sailing really well this week so it will be a close battle but a good one. But, I’m sailing faster than I’ve ever sailed before and I’m feeling really good so I will just keep trying my best.

Annalise Murphy (IRE) – Laser Radial
Overall Leader
This event is being used as the Irish selection trails; being the only Irish Laser Radial sailor it’s not quite as important for me as it is the other girls so it takes a lot of pressure off me. It’s really important to get used to the venue, being here you get a real idea of what it’s going to be like. It’s pretty scary that it’s happening so soon but hopefully I can just be as prepared as possible for it. I’m just looking forward to going out racing each day and seeing what happens.

Nick Thompson (GBR) – Laser
Overall Leader
The first two days were pretty tough, getting in at 7.30 or 8 o’clock every day so it’s a bit nicer to go out there and get the job done a lot quicker and get in a bit sooner. We had good breeze, the same as yesterday, some really good breeze, and it’s going well so far.

I’m not looking too much at the overall results at the moment, I’m just trying to take each race as it comes, but it’s a good start which is what I need really.

I feel reasonably good – everyone’s struggling a bit as it’s been really, really tough conditions for the last three days. I’m feeling OK but it’s about going and getting maximum recovery now and make sure I am ready for tomorrow, and hopefully if it’s breezy again I should be in good shape.

Pretty much everyone that’s here racing is taking this event incredibly seriously – the game is raised quite a bit here and you can tell that people are feeling the pressure. For myself it’s about trying to not let that get to me and just trying to focus on each race as it comes and go from there.

Sibello 1, Conti 3, Negri e Sensini 6, questo è il tabellino che l’Italia porta a casa alla fine della seconda giornata alla Skandia Sail For Gold, regata nelle acque olimpiche di Weymouth.
I Sibello continuano a macinare, perdon un pochino dell’ineccepibile smalto di ieri ma comunque si portano a casa un 2-8-3 che vale sempre la vetta con 5 punti sulla squadriglia inglese, che impegnata nei trial secchi piazza i suoi al 2°, 3°. 7° e 8°.
Giulia Conti e Giovanna Micol passano in testa alla classifica alla fine della terza prova ma un 18° nella quarta le fa retrocedere al terzo posto.
Diego Negri ed Enrico Voltolini continuano ad andare forte in mezzo ad una tribù di mostri sacri e dopo la regata in notturna di ieri piazzano un 4 e 14 che li tengono egregiamente a galla in una classe dove si stanno facendo male Percy, Marazzi, Polgar e Rohart. Al primo e terzo posto i due residenti acquisiti di Malcesine: Scheidt e Loof.
Alessandra Sensini invece è sempre davanti: 4-5-6-3 ma senza riuscire a tirare le zampate all’Ispanica Alabau che non va mai oltre il secondo.

Altro discorso per il resto della truppa con i pass nazionali: Zandonà-Zucchetti lontani dai loro abituali risultati sono soltanto 32i con un 10 come miglior prestazione in quattro manche, i Marchigiani Regolo e Baldassarri lontanissimi, 32° e 24°, idem per la Clapcich 47° ed Esposito 36°.
Ma ecco il report ufficiale:

- If yesterday was all about the subtleties of light air racing, today was all about fitness and technique in the building breeze and waves. Weymouth turned it on with sunshine and an afternoon breeze that topped out in excess of 25 knots on the outer courses.

Racing on the outer race course in the Finn was the current Olympic Champion Ben Ainslie (GBR). Ainslie answered some of those who doubted that he could win here in the breeze. Only Ivan Kliakovic Gaspic (CRO) ended up accumulating fewer points than Ainslie. Kliakovic Gaspic’s second and fifth place pulled him up to second overall and onto equal points with Britain’s triple Olympic gold medallist.
Ainslie will probably be disappointed with his seventh place in the day’s opening race, but as the breeze built though the afternoon to 20 knots, he will be much happier with a win in the second and final race of the day. Overnight leader Dan Slater (NZL) added another bullet and a tenth place to his scoreline, dropping him down to third. Giles Scott (GBR) pulled up two places to fourth, eight points off the leading duo.
Sharing the outer course with the Finns was the Star fleet. Four-time Olympic medallist Robert Scheidt – an old Laser rival of Ainslie’s – is now sailing Stars with his Brazilian team-mate Bruno Prada. They also prospered in the breeze, adding two second places to their bullet from yesterday. Five points behind are two-time Olympic medallist, Mateusz Kusznierewicz sailing with Domini Zycki (POL). Another two-time Olympic medallist Fredrik Lööf (SWE), sailing with Max Salminen are 14 points behind the Brazilians in third. In a class that is stacked with medallists, current Olympic champion Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson started their climb up the leaderboard. A fourth and 11th place leaves them 12th overall after three races have been completed.
On the harbour course for the Paralympic teams, it was the 2.4mR’s turn to race in the morning, so they got a milder roughing up from the weather. It was the Netherlands Thierry Schmitter that took the day with two bullets to pull up to the top of the leaderboard, passing France’s Damien Seguin – Schmitter’s countryman, Rademaker remains in third. But it is Schmitter that is the current ISAF World Cup leader, and he was clearly loving the conditions, saying afterwards, ‘Sometimes it almost feels like you are in a washing machine. It makes you feel alive.’
Once the 2.4mRs were finished on the Paralympic course, the SKUDs and Sonars took over, but not for long in the case of the former, only managing one race before being sent ashore in the freshening conditions. The race was won by Skandia Team GBR’s Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell to creep one point closer to the overnight leaders, Beijing silver medallists, Australians Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch. The other Australian pair of Jamie Dunross and Rachael Cox dropped to third.
The Sonars had a better day of it, completing two races. The overnight tie between Australia’s Colin Harrison and Russell Boaden and America’s Rick Doerr and Brad Kendell was broken in favour of the latter. But both teams suffered a dramatic slide down the leaderboard to fifth and sixth respectively. The new leaders are Britain’s John Robertson and Hannah Stodel, who tied the day with Udo Hessels and Marcel van Veen – both pairs had a first and a second.
There was a surprise pairing at the top of the 470 women’s leaderboard. Saskia Clark thought her Olympic aspirations could be over for 2012 when her former partner, double gold medallist Sarah Ayton, retired from Olympic sailing in February. But after carefully assessing her options, she paired up with Hannah Mills. Mills is a talented young sailor who had excelled at youth level, but not found the right partner at senior level. The pairing started to shine in Hyeres in April, finishing third in the World Cup Event. They now lead the fleet at Skandia Sail for Gold, having won two out of their four races sailed. Danish pairing Henriette Koch and Lene Sommer are seven points adrift in second after four races sailed, with Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol one point adrift in third.
The 470 men are split into two fleets, Pierre Lebouche and Vincent Garos (FRA) won in Hyeres, the last World Cup event they competed in, and with a consistent 6, 1, 4, 6 scoreline, are leading again in Weymouth. Sweden’s Anton Dahlberg and Sebastian Tling lie second with Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic (CRO) one point behind in third.
The RS:X Women’s Fleet had a fantastic day’s racing in winds up to 20 knots. It belonged to Korzits Lee who placed two firsts. However Lee was closely followed in both races by Alabau Marina and her two seconds bumped her up to the overall lead after day two. The Men’s RS:X fleet were also out late, and New Zealand’s Jp Tobin and the Netherlands Dorian van Rijsselberge’s dominated their flights with two wins each. But a better performance yesterday puts Tobin ahead, with Taehoon splitting the two men after getting a couple of second places.
With Anna Tunncliffe (USA) now competing in the Match Racing, there is no reigning Olympic champion campaigning in the Laser Radial class. Finland’s Sari Multala has been crowned Laser Radial World Champion for the past two years, but now it’s all about dominating at the 2012 Olympic venue. She currently lies third after four races completed, but only three points adrift of Evi Van Acker (BEL) and one point adrift of Marit Bouwmeester (NED).
It was the Laser Men who were out late this evening, as the race officers worked their way through the sub-fleets that have to race on this course. They all sailed three races to try to catch up their schedule, and the overnight leaders all slid down the leaderboard. It’s now Austria’s Andreas Geritzer in front, chased by World Champion, Australian Tom Slingsby. The overnight leader, Netherland’s Rutger van Schaardenburg was back to third.
The 49er’s were catching air at times in Portland Harbour today, and it was the Italian pairing Pietro Sibello and Gianfranco Sibello that flew highest and fastest. They have finished first and second at the two World Cup events they have competed in this year and they are currently top of the 49er leadeboard from Britain’s John Pink and Rick Peacock. The Britain’s are engaged in their own internecine battle, with Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes in third.
The Match Racing completed the first group stage, giving us the Gold Group (Quarter Final) qualifiers. From Group A it was the Netherlands’ Mandy Mulder, Annemieke Bes and Merel Witteveen topping the group with six points equal to – but winning the tie-break with – second placed Sally Barkow, Elizabeth Kratizig-Burnham and Alana O’Reilly from the USA.
In Group B, Anne-claire Le Berre, Alice Ponsar and Myrtille Ponge (FRA) went through on six points, one win clear of Australia’s Nicky Souter, Jessica Eastwell and Lucinda Witty, qualifying in second. And from Group C it was Anna Tunnicliffe, Molly Vendemoer and Debbie Capozzi (USA) going through with a clean sheet, and Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor (GBR) joining them with five wins.-

E’ iniziata la Skandia Sail for Gold e solo un equipaggio italiano è al comando…..quelli che dall’inizio dell’anno sono più in palla….quello che solo io riesco a fare andar male….i Sibello Brothers! 2-1-2 è il tabellino quotidiano e considerando che non manca proprio nessuno….Conti-Micol iniziano male la giornata (20°) e la chiudono bene con un bullet e sono quinte. Nelle tavole Esposito è ventesimo con 5 e 26 mentre la Sensini è nona e fa 4 e 5. Nei Finn, quattro inglesi nei primi 10 ed il nostro outsider Baldassarri è ventesimo.
Indietro Zandonà-Zucchetti al 39° con un 18 e un 21 ed i Laser: Regolo che con solo una prova corsa è 21°, la Clapcich è 15°.
Le Star partono alle 19 e la classifica non è pubblicata quindi possiamo solo sperare che Negri-Voltolini siano davanti.

Ed ecco un estratto dal comunicato stampa ufficiale:
….anticipation was high this morning when the sailors arrived at the Olympic centre, but the wind had other ideas, toying with the race officials as they tried to set fair race course in the light and shifty conditions. The Match Racing got started on time, others were not so lucky with the Laser Radial’s waiting ashore until 17:00 before being sent afloat.

The RS:X fleet got going at a reasonable hour, and managed a couple of races for both the men and the women. Blanca Manchon from Spain showed the class that made her the 2010 World Champion with two bullets to lead overall from France’s Charline Picon, hot on her heels with a first and second. In the RS:X Men it was Poland’s Piotr Myszka that matched Manchon’s results with two wins, but with a slightly bigger advantage, this time to his countryman Lukasz Grodzicki, who is in second overnight with a first and third. Britain’s Nick Dempsey won the second race to pull himself into third overall.

The 49ers were also the beneficiaries of a race course close to Weymouth beach, and got a couple of races in for both flights. There was another outstanding performance in this fleet, this time from Italy’s Sibello brothers posting two seconds and a first to lead overall from the Austrian pair of Nico Luca Marc Delle Karth and Nikolaus Leopold Resch.

The 470s started mid-afternoon with some of the fleet’s most recognisable names struggling in the conditions. It was the Croatian pair of Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic that topped the day with a second and a third, closely followed by Pierre Leboucher and Vincent Garos of France. Portugal’s Alvaro Marinho has been combining his match racing on the World Tour with the 470, and posted a third and a fourth with crew Miguel Nunes and hold third overnight. Aussie World Champions Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page were back in 15th. The 470 Women saw stronger performances from the superstars with 2010 Dutch World Champions Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout leading overall from Tara Pacheco and Berta Betanzos of Spain.

The Star and Finn classes were not released until 15:00 hrs and had the longest sail out to their course. They finally got underway at 17:30 after the wind had settled, and managed a single race. No one was particularly surprised to see Britain’s triple gold medallist Ben Ainslie lead for the first lap, but then New Zealand’s Dan Slater slipped through on the final round when Ainslie sailed to the wrong gate, and took the win. In the Stars it was all about Brazil’s Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada, winners of their one race from Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki, with Canada’s Richard Clarke and Tyler Bjorn in third.

The huge Laser fleet was out late, a combination of split flights – and the multiple starts required to get some of them away cleanly – making for a long day. In the end it was Germany’s Franziska Goltz that took the gun in the single Radial race, beating China’s Lijia Xu and Sari Multala. In the Men’s fleet, Netherland’s Rutger van Schaardenburg won their single race from Britain’s Nick Thompson and New Zealand’s Andy Maloney.

Grandissimo Regolo! Un nostro Amico, un grande Atleta, anche lui ha fatto parte del Brontolo Sailing Squadron!

Al telefono, la voce andava e veniva e la “erre” moscia dava il meglio di se… non c’ho capito molto… M.R. “sono partito vicino alla boa… lui mi stava 2 barche sopra… sapevo che il vento avrebbe girato un pò a sinistra…, bastava che qualcuno toccava una boa… una bandierina gialla… niente, tutto regolare, nessuna penalità a nessuno, io ho fatto primo e lui decimo… il giorno prima pensavo serenamente che era finito tutto… Laurì, quando ho visto come è finita la regata non ci volevo credere…”
