Porto Cervo, 8 settembre 2010. Non è bastato il temporale a fermare le 49 imbarcazioni impegnate nella Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2010, organizzato dallo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Dopo il rientro forzato in banchina di stamane, a causa del vento improvviso e della pioggia battente, la flotta ha preso nuovamente il largo nel primo pomeriggio, chiudendo in bellezza anche la terza giornata di prove di questa regata. Il vento costante da Ovest intorno ai 20 nodi ha infatti confermato il campo di regata di Porto Cervo quale uno dei più adatti a questo tipo di competizioni. In testa alla divisione Mini Maxi resta ancorato Alegre, mentre la classifica overall provvisoria della categoria Supermaxi è dominata da Visione. Tra i J Boats Ranger prevale sempre su Velsheda, mentre Esimit Europa 2 e Y3K sono avanti rispettivamente nelle divisioni Racing & Racing/Cruising e Wally.

Il Comitato di Regata dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda ha scelto un percorso costiero di circa 25 miglia marine per tutte le divisioni. Passato lo stretto fra Capo Ferro e l’Isola delle Bisce, i maxi yacht hanno costeggiato Caprera fino all’Isola dei Monaci. Da qui hanno puntato a Sud Est fino a lasciare Mortoriotto a dritta e infine sono risaliti al Golfo del Pevero, per poi tagliare il traguardo davanti a Porto Cervo.

MINI MAXI. E’ Bellamente il protagonista della prova di oggi, la sesta della serie per questa classe, il quale mette a segno la vittoria contro Ran di Niklas Zennstrom, l’armatore che guida uno tra gli equipaggi in lizza per la vittoria finale. Terzo classificato di oggi Shockwave di Neville Crichton. Ma l’esito della prova di oggi non è bastato a spodestare Alegre, armatore Andy Soriano, dal primo posto overall provvisorio, il quale domina ancora la classifica provvisoria ma con un solo punto di distacco da Ran. Terzo posto per Shockwave.

SUPER MAXI. Tra gli scafi della classe Supermaxi, impegnati oggi nella terza regata, i tedeschi di Visione hanno avuto la meglio su Hetairos e Sojana, dell’armatore inglese Peter Harrison. La classifica overall provvisoria vede in testa Visione, seguito da Hetairos e Hamilton II.

RACING & RACING CRUISING. A spuntarla in questa categoria è stato Esimit Europa 2 che, raggiungendo una velocità di quasi 25 nodi, ha battuto Highland Fling, dell’armatore Irvine Laidlaw, sia in tempo reale che corretto. Terzo posto per Singularity. E questo il tabellone generale provvisorio con cui le tre imbarcazioni si presenteranno alla penultima giornata di prove fissata per venerdì 10.

WALLY. Ottima prova anche per lo scafo inglese Gibian, ancora poco in evidenza in questi giorni, che porta a casa la vittoria di oggi battendo due ossi duri come Y3K di Claus Peter Offen e Magic Carpet 2 dell’armatore Lindsay Owen Jones, i quali occupano i primi due gradini del podio provvisorio per la classe tallonati da Indio di Andrea Recordati.

Durante la giornata di pausa prevista per domani, armatori ed equipaggi potranno riposarsi prima della volata finale degli ultimi due giorni di regate, decisivi per l’esito finale della gara.

Bornholm, Danimarca – 7 settembre 2010 – Il Team Azzurra dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda è appena arrivato in Danimarca, dove parteciperà al Danish Open 2010, settima tappa dell’ISAF World Match Racing Tour in programma dall’8 al 12 settembre. Dopo la non brillante performance della settimana scorsa al St. Moritz Match Race, in cui il Team Azzurra non è riuscito a entrare nei quarti di finale, Francesco Bruni e il suo fidato equipaggio – Matteo Auguadro, Tom Burnham e Pierluigi De Felice – sono pronti a rifarsi nelle acque danesi dove sfideranno, una volta ancora, i titani del match racing.

“La settimana scorsa a St. Moritz eravamo un po’ fuori forma a causa della nostra lunga assenza dalle regate di match racing. Abbiamo sentito un po’ di ruggine soprattutto nelle partenze, ma abbiamo rivisto con attenzione i nostri errori e speriamo di aver spazzato via ogni indecisione. Il livello dei partecipanti in questo Tour è incredibile, non c’è di meglio al mondo e non è certo un’impresa facile spadroneggiare in questa flotta. Comunque speriamo di rifarci in questa nuova sede del WMRT, sarà un evento sicuramente molto combattuto: i velisti danesi, infatti, sono molto forti nel match racing e vorranno conquistare gli onori di casa.”

Nel 2010 il Danish Open ha cambiato sede da Aarhus all’isola di Bornholm, nel Mar Baltico. I concorrenti regateranno a bordo di DS 37 One-Design Match-Racer, considerata come la barca perfetta per il match racing, disegnata specificamente per questa disciplina da un team di progettazione danese nel 1991.

Il Danish Open è uno degli ultimi due eventi rimasti prima della tappa finale dell’ISAF World Match Racing Tour (Monsoon Cup), quindi questa settimana la competizione sarà sicuramente molto intensa. Parteciperanno al Danish Open tutti i migliori team nella classifica dell’ISAF World Match Racing Tour 2010, tra cui l’attuale leader del Tour Mathieu Richard (FRA), il campione mondiale in carica di match racing Adam Minoprio (NZL) e il triplice campione olimpico Ben Ainslie. Completano la lista dei ‘Tour Card Holders’ Peter Gilmour (AUS), quattro volte campione mondiale di match racing, Bertrand Pacé (FRA), Torvar Mirsky (AUS), Francesco Bruni (ITA) e Bjorn Hansen (SWE).

Il gruppo delle cosiddette ‘Wildcard Entries’ (ossia gli skipper che non partecipano a tutte le tappe del Tour) include: il velista locale Mads Ebler (DEN), il ventenne William Tiller (NZL), Susanne Ward (DEN) e Michael Buckley (USA).

ENGLISH VERSION
Day 2 of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup had epic written all over it from the break of dawn. The promised southeasterly winds were on schedule; a building sea-state, plenty of sunshine and forty-seven maxi yachts champing at the bit to enjoy Porto Cervo at its best. Racing started as programmed at 1130 CEST in 18 knots from the southeast. Some crews were forced into unplanned pit stops as conditions took their toll; others kept their focus on the sought-after appointment with destiny scheduled for the end of the week. Winners for the day comprised: Highland Fling (MON) in Maxi, Hetairos (CAY) in Supermaxi with Ranger (CAY) winning the J match, and, Magic Carpet (GBR) in Wally. In the Mini Maxi Rolex Worlds, British yacht Rán’s score line of 1,2,2 made her top dog, but Alegre’s (GBR) 4,1,1 keeps her in overall control.

Peter Craig, the Principal Race Officer of the week is ex-Navy. There was a touch of the swashbuckler in his efforts today. Three windward-leeward races in four hours for the Mini Maxis looked a tall order at the best of times; with the breeze hovering around 20 knots and upwards during the afternoon added to a lumpy seaway, it took a herculean effort on the part of the race committee to keep it clean and fair. The three races were similar in length: 8.8-nautical miles for the first and 8-nm for the second and third, all over four-legs.

Rán’s results from the day looked excellent to an outsider. On board the feeling was ‘could do better, must do better’. Andres Soriano’s Alegre is on fire. Rán’s strategist, Tim Powell, emphasized though that there is plenty of racing left in the Mini Maxi Rolex Worlds, after dissecting today’s endeavours, “the conditions were challenging. We had twenty knots most of the day, piping up to 24 knots for the last race. The sea state got progressively bumpier; the races were short and, to be honest, it was pretty frantic. We had a reasonable day; we won the first race and then had two seconds. I think the feeling on the boat is that we would have liked to have done a bit better, but to be boat of the day is always good.”

Rán is one of the biggest Racing mini maxis competing here; only the Bill Koch chartered Titan XV (USA) is longer. Powell feels short sharp windward-leeward courses are harder on boats of her size than some of her smaller sisters, “it is tough on the crew and quite demanding on a boat like Rán with the sail hoists and changes. We used the same jib and spinnaker all day, but we are talking big bits of gear to get up and down at each mark rounding.” A coastal course is scheduled for tomorrow and Powell is hopeful that that will advantage Rán in her quest to reel in Alegre, “we are looking at anything between 10 and 30 knots tomorrow according to the forecasts, but we’ll be going up through the islands, I expect. That will give us a chance to stretch her legs a little bit and boat speed may pay out for us.” Given Alegre has proved herself previously over long distances (she was overall winner at Rolex Middle Sea Race in 2009) and clearly has the bit between her teeth this week that may be wishful thinking.

The best of the Cruiser/Racer mini maxis looks to have been Adriano Calvini’s Felci 61 Itacentodue (ITA), whose score line of 9,10,7 in the Worlds fleet was by far the most aggressive of the day amongst the less race-oriented group of contenders. With a 9, 6 in the second and third races, Allsmoke (MLT) might reasonably have hoped for better things had a damaged mainsail ahead of the start not wrecked their first race and led to a trip back to the marina for a replacement. Allsmoke were not alone in having problems. Michael Cotter, division winner here in 2009, had his racing curtailed completely, also before the off, with a forestay problem. Work is underway to get Whisper (IRL) back out on the course for tomorrow. Idea (ITA) had a crew injury during the first race that cut short their day. H20 (ITA) and Lupa of London (ITA) failed to finish the last race of the day.

On the coastal course, it was screecher. 36-nautical miles are meat and drink to the maxi yachts. Igor Simcic’s Esimit Europa 2 (SLO) was fastest around the track, which took them to a windward mark, followed by a run to Monaci and a fast reach past alongside Caprera as they dived into the channel. It was downwind all the way to Barrettinelli di Fuori, where the fleet barrelled out of the ‘Alley’ into the building seaway and an upwind slog to the finish off Porto Cervo.

Slog is a relative term. Esimit completed the course in 2 hours 52 minutes. Whilst skipper Flavio Favini was happy enough with that, it was not enough to hold off the relentless challenge of Irvine Laidlaw’s Highland Fling that levelled the series with a four-minute corrected time victory. Favini’s view of the day: “I think we have had a good race. Our manoeuvres were good, but I think we could have done a bit better on the run downwind from Secca di Tre Monti to Palau. We may have made some mistakes regarding wind shifts, but this aside I think we have sailed the boat well today.” Favini is no greenhorn and knows full well that he has a weapon of extraordinary power in his hands, which occasionally reflects in the approach, “considering that the boat is very big and goes very fast, sometimes we may be a bit conservative and try not to take risks in the narrow passages.” Experience shows time and again in these waters that knowing when to reign back can avert a rig loss or worse still, an encounter with the many rocks hidden beneath the surface.

In the Wally Division it was Lindsay Owen Jones’ Magic Carpet’s turn to shine. Second home on the water, a mere thirty seconds behind Y3K (GER), converted to a fourteen second win. Amongst Owen Jones’ crew is Tom Whidden, a veteran of this racing area, having first sailed here in the early 1980s, “of all the venues that I race in, this is probably the best. It is really pretty going through the islands. The sea conditions were nice and the wind strength was really good today. We do not get to sail in a southerly very often here and that was fun, something new. We won today, but only won by 14 seconds. Y3K was nipping at our heels the whole way and actually at the last mark (in Pevero Bay), they just got ahead of us. We had a little better spinnaker set and maybe got a little puff right at the end to beat them by 14 seconds [on corrected]. It doesn’t get any closer than that and never gets much more exciting than that!”

The Supermaxi Division saw two of the largest yachts on the course – Hasso Plattner’s Visione (GER) and Albert Buell’s Saudade (MLT) engage in a Teutonic match-race both inside and outside the Maddalena archipelago. Suggesting that the crews threw their 40-plus-metre steeds into tack after tack and gybe after gybe would be to exaggerate. But two owners prepared to race such magnificent craft head-to-head in confined waters deserve some hyperbole. Buell was certainly invigorated by the experience, “it was a great race. We started very well and were first to the windward mark in our class. We were very fast down through the islands and then the leg back was 12-nautical miles upwind. Here we lost our first place to our competitor, Hasso Plattner, but it was an enjoyable and hard race. It is certainly very exciting to match race these two boats through the islands. We enjoy sailing here very, very much.”

Results did not favour the mighty moderns though. Salperton posted a fourth place that will have cheered owner, Barry Houghton, but it was not enough to prevent a classic looking one-two-three. The ketch, Hetairos (CAY), made hay from the conditions to correct into second, splitting the two J-Class yachts. But it was Ranger’s day once again, as America’s Cup legend Brad Butterworth explained, “we managed to get quite a good start below the big boats. Velsheda was in between, got rolled over quite quickly and so dropped back. That gave us an advantage around the top mark. Then it was a bit of a procession from there on, as Velsheda broke a jib [halfway up the initial beat]. Even though they were not quite in contention to get to us, they stayed close enough to do so if we had a problem.”

Butterworth, who helped with the helming, thought today’s conditions were good for the heavy displacement boats, “[Ranger] is a big heavy boat. I don’t think it’s that easy to steer all the way around the course, but it’s fun to sail. 1936 is when this boat was designed and it is pretty difficult to push it any harder than we did today. Everything is loaded to the max, but we have some good crew on board, who’ve been with the boat for a long time now.”

Tomorrow will see coastal racing for all divisions. The weather forecast has a degree of uncertainty about it with wind predictions varying from the dull to the unnerving. The racing will never be dull and even if it is at times unnerving, it will always be a thrill to witness the crews at work and these craft in full flight. Racing commences at 1130 CEST.

The 2010 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in conjunction with the International Maxi Association (IMA), runs from 5 to 11 September. Racing continues tomorrow, Wednesday, and with races scheduled for each following day, save Thursday, the prize giving on Saturday will be the culmination of an intense week of big boat competition. From the most luxurious, through the most traditional, to the most advanced monohulls afloat today, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is nothing if not an astonishing line up of sailing power.

GRANDE VENTO ALLA MAXI YACHT ROLEX CUP
Porto Cervo, 7 settembre 2010. Condizioni meteo ideali per la seconda giornata di prove della Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2010. Il vento da Sud Est tra i 18 e i 20 nodi ha infatti soddisfatto le aspettative su uno degli eventi più attesi della stagione sportiva dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, regalando ad armatori ed equipaggi una giornata di sfide davvero entusiasmanti. La classifica overall provvisoria dopo due giornate vede in testa Alegre per i Mini Maxi, classe che corre anche per la prime edizione del Mini Maxi Rolex World Championship, e Hamilton II per i Super Maxi. Tra i J Boats è invece in testa Ranger. Highland Fling è primo nella divisione Racing & Racing/Cruising, mentre Y3K è avanti tra gli scafi Wally.

MINI MAXI. Nella terza prova della serie, la prima odierna, Ran di Niklas Zennstrom ha avuto la meglio su Shockwave, dell’armatore neozelandese Neville Crichton, e su Container, mentre durante la quarta prova è Alegre ad avere la meglio su Ran e Bella Mente, dell’armatore Hap Fauth. La quinta e ultima prova si è chiusa ancora con la vittoria di Alegre, che vince su Ran, mentre Container arriva terzo. Il tabellone provvisorio della classe è così composto: Alegre, con ben quattro vittorie su cinque, seguito da Ran e Shockwave.

Le altre divisioni impegnate nella prova costiera hanno affrontato un percorso di circa 36 miglia marine che, dopo la partenza di fronte alla Marina di Porto Cervo, conduce verso Nord fino a lasciare a sinistra l’Isola dei Monaci. Da qui la flotta ha costeggiato il versante orientale dell’isola di Caprera e proseguito lungo la costa tra la terra ferma e Santo Stefano. Con Spargi a sinistra i maxi yacht hanno poi proseguito fino a Budelli e passato lo stretto di mare tra Santa Maria e Barrettinelli . Da qui hanno infine effettuato l’ultima parte del percorso fino a tagliare il traguardo davanti all’imboccatura del porto.

SUPER MAXI. Hetairos ha chiuso la regata di oggi al primo posto davanti a Salperton e Visione di Hasso Plattner, ma nella classifica overall al primo gradino si trova Hamilton II.

RACING & RACING CRUISING. La prova di oggi ha visto il dominio in tempo corretto di Highland Fling, dell’armatore Irvine Laidlaw, seguito da Esimit Europa 2 e Singularity. Una podio che trova conferma nella classifica generale provvisoria della classe.

WALLY. Nella regata di oggi ha avuto la meglio Magic Carpet 2 dell’armatore Lindsay Owen Jones, tallonato dai tedeschi di Y3K, armatore Claus Peter Offen e da Indio di Andrea Recordati. Il tabellone generale provvisorio vede ora al vertice Y3K, seguito da Magic Carpet 2 e dagli inglesi di JOne.

Domani la terza giornata di regate a partire dalle 11.30, con un programma che prevede la regata costiera anche per la classe Mini Maxi. Sono previsti venti da Ovest intorno ai 15 nodi.

Primo giorno di regate all’insegna del buon vento alla Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2010, organizzata dallo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaborazione con il title sponsor Rolex. Suddivise nelle classi Mini Maxi, Super Maxi & J Boats, Racing & Racing/Cruising e Wally, le 49 imbarcazioni hanno affrontato la prima regata sospinte da un vento da Nord Ovest tra i 7 e gli 8 nodi. Quest’anno inoltre, le barche della divisione Mini Maxi si contendono il podio della prima edizione del Mini Maxi Rolex World Championship. Protagonisti della prima giornata di prove nelle rispettive classi sono Alegre, Hamilton II, Esimit Europa 2 e J One.
MINI MAXI. Il vincitore del primo percorso a bastone è Alegre di Andy Soriano, seguito da Shockwave del neozelandese Neville Crichton e dallo scafo Titan 15, Bill Koch al timone, e la seconda prova si è chiusa ancora con il dominio di Alegre, seguita da Ran di Niklas Zennstrom e Shockwave. La classifica overall provvisoria del Mondiale Mini Maxi vede dunque in testa Alegre, seguita da Shockwave e Ran.

Le altre tre divisioni di Maxi yacht hanno regatato lungo un percorso costiero che, dopo la partenza di fronte al Golfo del Pevero, prevede un lungo tragitto verso Nord fino a lasciare a sinistra Barrettinelli di Fuori. Lasciata Budelli a dritta, la flotta ha percorso il tratto di mare tra La Maddalena e Spargi per poi proseguire tra Santo Stefano e la terra ferma fino al Golfo di Arzachena. Dopo un passaggio di fronte al faro di Capo Ferro, le barche hanno concluso il percorso costeggiando il Golfo del Pevero e infine hanno tagliato il traguardo davanti a Porto Cervo.
SUPER MAXI & J BOATS. Al primo posto della classifica generale provvisoria di questa classe sale Hamilton II, tattico Ray Davies, seguito da Saudade e Gliss di Marco Vogele. Tra i J Boats che corrono in questa categoria Ranger prevale inoltre su Velsheda.

RACING & RACING CRUISING. In cima al podio provvisorio svetta Esimit Europa 2, skipper Flavio Favini, seguito da Highland Fling di Irvine Laidlaw e DSK Pioneer di Danilo Salsi. Favini ha così commentato: < >.
WALLY. Dietro al primo classificato, J One di Jean-Charles Decaux, si piazzano Y3K di Claus Peter Offen e gli inglesi di Dark Shadow.

Up to today, the defending women’s champions from Italy have owned the 2010 Open 470 European Championships. Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol might have had a bad opening heat at the beginning of the week, but since then a string of race wins had launched them into a seemingly unassailable lead.

A lot can happen in a day’s racing on the tricky waters of Istanbul, however, and after a tough two races the Italians face a real fight if they’re to keep hold of the European crown. Two French teams demonstrated incredible mastery of the light and patchy breezes, with Emanuelle Rol and Helene Defrance scoring two 3rd places to move into the lead.  Their team mates Camille Lecointre and Mathilde Geron scored two 2nds to move into 2nd overall, just a point off the lead.

Conti’s 10 point lead may now have dissolved into an 8-point deficit, but with two fleet races remaining in the 31-boat women’s division before the double-points Medal Race on Monday, there’s still time for the Italians to take their revenge.

The Italian skipper was in good spirits considering she’d just lost her lead. “Our performance was so and so,” said Conti. “The first race we were caught out by a big righty when we were on the left, and we lost 10 boats just like that, and we couldn’t recover.” However, the Italians were jolted into life during the next race after suffering a shocking start. “We rounded the top mark 3rd last, but we got closer to the boats in front of us, and on the second upwind stayed more in the middle of the course, tacking below other boats, not caring about bad air, just doing what we wanted to do. We climbed back up to 4th at the finish. We put a lot of effort in to end up in that position, we didn’t just sail into a corner and hope for some luck. I think that was our best race this week.”

The first race saw all kinds of leaders before the Israeli team of Gil Cohen and Dana Mamriev pulled through to win. “We like these conditions,” said Mamriev, “they remind us of sailing at home, working on the shifts and looking for the gusts.”

British team Hannah Mills and Claire Cumming had had their moment at the front of that race, along with team mates Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth, before both teams got caught out by the shifts. However Mills put it right in the next race, winning by a massive margin as the sun was setting over Istanbul. “Scary race,” said Mills, “but nice to get a race win in that stuff. We just tried to sail our own race rather than getting caught up in small battles, keeping focused on the bigger picture.”

If that was lesson of the day, to sail the wind rather than the fleet, then the Greeks have certainly taken it to heart in the men’s Gold fleet. Overnight leaders Panagiotis Mantis and Pavlos Kagialis extended their advantage with two 5ths, and now lead by six points from Israel’s Gideon Kliger and Eran Sela, who won today’s first race.

Just two points behind the Israelis are another strong Greek duo, Panagiotis Kampouridis and Theodoros Polychronidis. French sailors Nicholas Charbonnier and Baptiste Meyer-Dieu won today’s other race and move up to 4th ahead of the defending European Champions, the Croatian team Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic who slipped badly today.

Charbonnier was pleased to have won a race, but said he had a lot to learn from how the Greeks handle the seemingly random shift and gust patterns. Even series leader Kagialis said he preferred strong winds, but was still happy to have done so well today. “In the second race we had a penalty from the jury at the start, I don’t know why. But we did a 720 turn, started last boat, but with good tactics we climbed up to the top five.” His helmsman Mantis attributed their success to “a lot of patience, and a little bit of luck. You always need luck!”

In the men’s Silver fleet, the points remain very tight with Finland’s Joonas and Niklas Lindgren holding on to the lead by a single point from 470 Junior World and European Champions, Sofian Bouvet and Jeremie Mion.

As for tomorrow, Gold fleet leader Panagiotis Mantis believes strong winds are returning. If his 24-hour weather forecasting proves as good as his short-term reading of the wind shifts, then we’ll be in for a storming final days’ fleet racing on the warm waters of Istanbul, before the Medal Race showdown on Monday.

If strong winds do return tomorrow, that would suit Giulia Conti just fine. Asked if she was ready for a fight, Conti replied: “I was born ready. It’s going to be tough because both of the French are very good sailors, smart and fast. So yes, it’s going to be tough, but the best team will win in the end.”

The 2010 Open 470 European Championships conclude on 6 September. The regatta is organised by The Istanbul Sailing Club in co-operation with the International 470 Class Association and the Turkish Sailing Federation.

Ciao Marco!

Questo è un momento molto triste per i Mascalzoni. E’ di poco fa la notizia dell’improvvisa scomparsa del grande amico Marco Carpaneda.

Da anni hai seguito il team in tutte le sue avventure, dalla prima campagna di Coppa America in Nuova Zelanda sino al Louis Vuitton Trophy a La Maddalena di pochi mesi fa.

Ci hai lasciati proprio ora quando siamo pronti a partire per la prossima sfida. Sarai sempre nei nostri cuori.

Ti salutiamo con immenso affetto.

LELAGAIN E SIDERACORDIS DIFENDONO LA TESTA DELLA CLASSIFICA TRA GLI X-35 E GLI X-41

Terzo giorno di regate, alla Marina di Scarlino, della Steiner X-Yachts Gold Cup, la manifestazione organizzata dallo Yacht Club Italiano e dal Club Nautico Scarlino in collaborazione con X-Yachts Italia e con la partnership di Steiner.
Alla vigilia della conclusione delle regate, la lotta per la conquista dei titoli si fa sempre più agguerrita anche perché – soprattutto nell’X-35 World Championship – pochi punti separano i primi in classifica.
I risultati dell’X-35 World Championship Vento di maestrale tra gli 8 e i 10 nodi per la prima prova di giornata, partita alle ore 13. Protagonista di una regata molto combattuta con incroci serrati e ravvicinati è Tixelio di Carlo Brenco (Gabriele Bruni alla tattica)
che tiene il comando lato dopo lato e vince, seguito da Lelagain di Franco Solerio (Branco Brcin tattico) e dall’equipaggio finlandese di X.O. di Annsi Lyden. La seconda prova di giornata prende il via con immutate condizioni meteo: vince nuovamente Tixelio di Carlo Brenco, secondi gli svedesi di Matrisen di Bjorn Osterberg, terzi gli inglesi di X On the Beach di
Ingo Dietrich. Le ottime condizioni meteo permettono al Comitato di Regata di far partire la terza prova: primo a tagliare la linea di arrivo Spirit of Nerina di Alberto Fusco, secondo Blue Sky di Claudio Terrieri, terza Margherita di Roberto Mazzucato.
Questa la classifica generale provvisoria dopo tre giorni di regate e nove prove con uno scarto.

I risultati dell’X-41 European Championship
Prima regata con maestrale a 10 nodi per gli X-41: a vincere la prova Malafemmena di Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Matteo Ivaldi alla tattica), seguito da Raffica di Pasquale Orofino (tattico Paolo Semeraro), terzo Le Coq Hardi di Maurizio Pavesi (Francesco De Angelis alla tattica).
Seconda prova con condizioni meteo immutate. Durante la prima bolina gli spagnoli di Iberostar (armatore Javier Dominguez, tattico Luis Doreste) cercano di infilarsi mure a sinistra su Le Coq Hardi e sugli estoni di Techno Nicol (armatore Mati Sepp): gli spagnoli vengono penalizzati e costretti a compiere due giri, al termine dei quali si ritrovano in coda alla flotta. Vince la regata Techno Nicol, seconda Raffica di Pasquale Orofino, terzo Le Coq Hardi.
Terza prova di giornata anche per gli X-41: la vince WB Five di Gianclaudio Bassetti, seguito da Sideracordis di Pier Vettor Grimani e da Malafemmena di Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
Questa classifica generale provvisoria dopo tre giorni di regate e nove prove con uno scarto.

La flotta degli Over 50’ ha regatato anche oggi in una lunga prova costiera con vento da nord ovest a 12 nodi, su un percorso che ha portato i partecipanti a girare l’Isola di Palmaiola.
Le classifiche: 1. Karuba 5 di Goranko Fizulic – 2. Capricciricci di Gian Luigi Dubbini (con a bordo Gianni Torboli) – 3. Trota di Martino Montanarini.

I risultati della X-Yachts Gold Cup
Anche oggi le barche si sono affrontate in due prove con vento regolare a 12 nodi nella prima prova e qualche salto di vento nella seconda. La Divisione Family ha disputato un percorso a triangolo e la Divisione Sport un percorso a bastone. Al momento di scrivere le classifiche non sono ancora disponibili.
E’ in programma per questa sera la cena per armatori ed equipaggi che si svolgerà presso il cantiere Yacht Service. Dopo una cena a base di specialità maremmane ci sarà musica dal vivo per ballare fino alle ore piccole. Durante la serata si svolgerà inoltre una raccolta di fondi a favore di Nave Italia, il brigantino destinato al recupero delle persone affette da
disagi fisici e psichici retto dalla Fondazione Tender to Nave Italia (creata dallo Yacht Club Italiano e dalla Marina Militare).
La Steiner X-Yachts Gold Cup termina domani con l’ultimo giorno di regate, al termine delle quali verranno assegnati i titoli di Campione del Mondo X-35 e Campione Europeo X-41 e verranno premiati i vincitori della Over 50’ Invitational e della X-Yachts Gold Cup.
Le dichiarazioni dei protagonisti
Paolo Semeraro, tattico di Raffica, seconda in classifica nell’X-41 European Championship: “Dopo la vittoria della Rolex Capri Sailing Week, questa per noi è un’ottima annata. Fino alla terza regata di oggi eravamo a pari punti con Sideracordis, ma un piccolo intoppo all’ultima boa ci ha penalizzato. Sarà difficile domani recuperare in una sola regata i 4 punti che ci dividono. E’ sempre un piacere regatare alla Marina di Scarlino: c’è un’ ottima organizzazione a terra e in mare e il vento è molto costante al punto da poterci regolare l’orologio”.
Roberto Spata, tattico di Spirit of Nerina, seconda in classifica nell’X-35 World Championship: “Siamo orgogliosi di questo risultato perché i cinque armatori si sono molto impegnati: questo è il frutto del loro lavoro. Rispetto a Novembre, quando abbiamo partecipato all’Invernale di Marina di Scarlino, di fatto abbiamo cambiato tutto, dall’equipaggio alle vele alle
regolazioni. Sono personalmente orgoglioso del lavoro che abbiamo fatto.”

The windiest day yet at the 2010 Finn Gold Cup in San Francisco produced some more thrilling racing, close finishes and spectacular sailing. Regatta leader Ed Wright has moved into a 13 point lead going into Saturday’s medal race after a scoring 3-1 while nearest rivals Rafa Trujillo (ESP) scored 2-3 and Giles Scott (GBR) scored 2-5.

Race nine was sailed in 16-20 knots with the right again proving popular with most of the fleet. Rafa Trujillo (ESP) and Ed Wright (GBR) led the fleet to the right hand side and played the few shifts on that side as the wind continued to increase. Wright narrowly led Trujillo round the top mark followed by Giles Scott (GBR), Eric Lidecis (USA), Mark Andrews (GBR) and Jonas Høgh Christensen (DEN).
Scott took the lead on the first downwind and dug deep to hang onto it on the second testing upwind leg. He pulling away slightly on the final reaches to record his first race win this week. Trujillo placed second to narrow the gap on Wright, who finished third. The gap between the leaders was now just nine points. But Wright was about to lay down the gauntlet and firmly take control of the series.

Race ten turned into a thrilling display of endurance and power as the wind whipped up a confused sea and the downwind became an adrenaline fuelled fun ride. Wright again led at the top mark, this time from Pieter-Jan Postma (NED), Trujillo and Scott. The first downwind was crucial and very patchy. Both Postma and Scott slipped past Wright and avoided the holes to take the lead while Trujillo lost a lot of ground to round in eighth. Wright was having none of that though and retook the lead and then extended on the gruelling second upwind to lead down the reaches and take his fourth race win of the week. Trujillo could only recover to fifth behind Wright, Postma, Gasper Vincec (SLO) and Scott.

This leaves Wright win a 13 point lead going into Saturday’s double scoring non-discardable medal race. He needs to finish seven boats ahead of Trujillo to make sure of the title. However, only five points separate second placed Trujillo and third placed Scott and if these two get into a battle for silver, then this could be the more interesting battle.

Wight commented, “Today was make or break. My goals were to just stay in contact with Rafa and Giles so tomorrow in the medal race I can have a little margin. But I found myself rounding both top marks first. Two good starts helped. It was windy on the downwinds and I wanted to sail conservatively with the steep chop making things a bit hairy. Finishing 3,1, was amazing for me as I have now extended my lead going into tomorrow. It’s all on now. Fingers crossed nothing goes wrong.

Wright is one of the four strong Skandia Team GBR sailors in San Francisco and all four are in the medal race – an impressive performance by any standard. In addition the European Champion Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO) has his best day with two top 10 finishes to scrape into the medal race.

A new face inside the top 10 is Brendan Casey (AUS). He said, “I love San Francisco anyway, so when I heard the Gold Cup was going to be here it was my goal to be here, and getting into the top 10 has been my objective since I came back into Finn sailing in May. It’s been a moderate to heavy air event and it’s been wonderful.”

“This is my second world championship in the Finn. I came from the Lasers when I got too big for that. I finished 15th in in 2007, but since then I have spent more time in the boat training. I spent time with Ed, Rafa, and Zach here in San Francisco for two weeks. Three years ago I just jumped straight in the Finn from the Laser and just did regatta after regatta. Spending some time in the boat with a good group of people that allowed me to improve my performance. For the medal my tactics is high risk. I have nothing to loose. “

Star performer of the day must be Pieter Jan Postma with a 6-2; his best result so far had been an 18th. Rediscovering the form that led him to Gold Cup and pre-Olympic silver in 2007, he said, “Today was good. Perfect conditions. I have sailed better and better this week and today was my day. I have been studying the last year and didn’t sail so much, so to see progress through the regatta is great. It sounds really strange at a worlds but the problem for me wasn’t the practice it was the goals. I wanted to do really well here but I wasn’t ready. I thought I would be after 10 days training, but I wasn’t. So next time I will do more. Sailing is about feelings and the feelings are getting better and better.”

Indian connection
The furthest travelled sailor at the regatta is Johal Nachhatar (IND), all the way from Mumbai. He has has a tough season with a changes of plans and not doing the regattas he hoped to do, but is upbeat about the future. He is now being coached by 2000 Silver Medalist Luca Devoti, and is optimistic about his learning curve and training plans over the coming year.

He said, “The conditions here are good, the place is good but I am disappointed in my performance. I had hoped to do much better. But I fell sick. I think my coach and I both got some food poisoning and I was really sick. I just managed to finish the first race on Wednesday and Luca sailed the boat back and I went off the hospital and they gave me fluids and injections, so I couldn’t sail yesterday, but today I will try.”
“I have taken on Luca as coach but we haven’t done much training yet. But we have some plans for the next six months so hopefully that will go well. He is with me for some time and for sure I really like working with him. I try and talk to him as much as I can and he is really committed to this. We did a month’s training in Valencia and he was spending at least eight or nine hours with me which is really great. For a guy of that level to give that much time to me it’s really fantastic. He takes it really seriously.”

“It would be great if there were more Finn sailors in India. I am trying to do whatever I can. We have a lot of Optimist sailors coming in now so maybe in the future they will move onto the Finn.”

Nachhatar is in the Indian Army which supports his sailing activities. “That is a big plus point for me. Sponsorship for sailing in India is hard. It’s all cricket, cricket, cricket. The system has been very good for me. They generally keep me free for sailing and they station me such that I can compete in regattas. So that’s going good. But Luca and I have made some plans and if that all works out we will hopefully see a better 2011.”

Ottime condizioni meteo per il secondo giorno di regate, alla Marina di Scarlino, della Steiner X-Yachts Gold Cup, la manifestazione organizzata dallo Yacht Club Italiano e dal Club Nautico Scarlino in collaborazione con X-Yachts Italia e con la partnership di Steiner.
La Steiner X-Yachts Gold Cup ha offerto oggi un colpo d’occhio davvero spettacolare con decine di vele di ogni dimensione a colorare il Golfo davanti a Scarlino.
Oltre agli X-35 e agli X-41 che si affrontano nell’X-35 World Championship e nell’X-41 European Championship oggi hanno infatti regatato anche i partecipanti alla prima edizione della Over 50’ Invitational e le 22 imbarcazioni (divise tra “Family” e “Sport”) della X-Yachts Gold Cup.
Le regate sono state quindi caratterizzate dal grande agonismo di barche che si danno battaglia per conquistare due prestigiosi titoli internazionali e dal divertimento di famiglie e appassionati che sono venuti a regatare su uno di campi di regata migliori d’Italia.

I risultati dell’X-35 World Championship
Tre regate di altissimo livello oggi per gli X-35 che hanno iniziato alle 12 e 40 con la prima prova di giornata svoltasi con un vento da sud tra i 10 e i 12 nodi. Gli inglesi di X On The Beach (armatore Ingo Dietrich, tattico Jochem Visser) hanno dominato e vinto la regata. Alle loro spalle si sono alternati Tixelio di Carlo Brenco (Gabriele Bruni alla tattica) e il Campione del Mondo in carica Lelagain di Franco Solerio (tattico Branco Brcin) arrivati rispettivamente secondo e terzo.
Il vento è girato a sudovest per la seconda prova di giornata: duello nelle prime posizioni tra Blue Sky di Claudio Terrieri, Spirit of Nerina di Alberto Fusco, Lelagain di Franco Solerio e Karma di Vladimiro Pegoraro. Ha avuto la meglio Spirit of Nerina, primo a tagliare la linea di arrivo, seguito da Lelagain e da Blue Sky.
Richiamo generale e partenza con bandiera nera per la terza e ultima prova di giornata, iniziata poco prima delle 16 con vento da sudovest a 12 nodi. La regata è stata molto serrata con passaggi in boa concitati e ravvicinati. Protagonista della prova Karma di Vladimir Pegoraro che ha tenuto il comando della flotta dominando gli avversari più vicini, gli inglesi di X On The Beach e gli svedesi di Matrisen (armatore Jon Fangel). Karma vince la regata, secondo X On the Beach, terzo Margherita di Roberto Mazzucato (Vasco Vascotto alla tattica).
Questa la classifica generale provvisoria dopo due giorni di regata: 1. Lelagain di Franco Solerio (ITA) – 2. Karma di Vladimiro Pegoraro (ITA) – 3. Spirit of Nerina di Alberto Fusco (ITA) – 4. Margherita di Roberto Mazzucato (ITA) – 5. Tixelio di Carlo Brenco (ITA).

I risultati dell’X-41 European Championship
Partenza alle 12 e 25 per la prima prova di giornata degli X-41, con ingaggi serrati tra Raffica di Pasquale Orofino (Paolo Semeraro alla tattica) e Le Coq Hardi di Maurizio Pavesi (tattico Francesco De Angelis) che si sono dati battaglia per tutta la regata. Raffica ha mantenuto il comando e ha vinto, secondo Sideracordis di Pier Vettor Grimani, terzi gli estoni di Techno Nicol (armatore Mati Sepp), quarto Le Coq Hardi.
Malafemmena di Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Matteo Ivaldi alla tattica) è stato invece il protagonista della seconda prova di giornata che ha vinto, seguito da Sideracordis, Le Coq Hardi e Raffica.
La terza regata, iniziata alle 15 e 45 con vento da sudovest a 12 nodi, è stata condotta da Techno Nicol di Mati Sepp, che ha tenuto a distanza il suo diretto avversario WB Five di Gianclaudio Bassetti. Techno Nicol taglia per primo la linea di arrivo, secondo WB Five, terzo Sideracordis, autore di una eccezionale rimonta.

I risultati della Over 50’ Invitational
I partecipanti a questa divisione, dieci barche over 50 piedi provenienti da tutta Europa e di differenti lunghezze, sono partiti scaglionati permettendo così di compensare i rispettivi tempi.
Le barche si sono affrontate in una regata costiera su un percorso a triangolo con boe naturali che li ha portati a girare lo scoglio dello Sparviero e a proseguire fino a Cerboli prima di fare ritorno alla Marina di Scarlino. Da segnalare la presenza del maestoso 65 piedi croato Karuba 5 di Goranko Fizulic e dell’equipaggio interamente femminile di Sandara, X-55 di Marta Dainelli. Le classifiche: 1. Ectabane di Alain Monnier – 2. Capricciricci di Gian Luigi Dubbini – 3. Karuba 5 di Goranko Fizulic.

I risultati della X-Yachts Gold Cup
Due prove per le 22 imbarcazioni della X-Yachts Gold Cup che si sono sfidate su due percorsi a bastone con i lati lunghi rispettivamente 1,2 miglia (prima regata) e 1,5 miglia (seconda regata).
Durante la prima prova le prime cinque barche si sono sgranate e hanno mantenuto la posizione fino alla fine mentre nella seconda la flotta si è mantenuta più compatta. Al momento di scrivere le classifiche sono in via di definizione.

Al ritorno dalle regate gli equipaggi hanno partecipato a una divertente iniziativa: il Pasta Contest di Pastificio Dei Campi. Ogni equipaggio ha mandato sulla bilancia il suo rappresentante più leggero: il velista meno pesante di ciascuna divisione (X-35, X-41, Divisione Sport, Divisione Family, Divisione Over 50’) ha vinto tanti chili di pasta quanto pesa.
Le regate proseguono domani venerdì 3 settembre e sabato 4 settembre. Domenica 5 è il giorno di riserva.

Le dichiarazioni dei protagonisti
Franco Solerio, armatore e timoniere dell’X-35 Lelagain che guida la classifica generale provvisoria dell’X-35 World Championship: “La flotta è molto forte ed è migliorata negli anni appiattendosi verso l’alto. I primi 7/8 in classifica possono aspirare al titolo. La sfida in regate competitive come un Campionato del Mondo è trovare quella soluzione nuova che ti dia qualcosa in più rispetto agli avversari. Il sapere di avere qualcosa di nuovo è un grande aiuto dal punto di vista psicologico”.
Pier Vettor Grimani, armatore dell’X-41 Sideracordis che guida la classifica generale provvisoria dell’X-41 European Championship: “Ci piace molto regatare con questa formula: noi siamo un equipaggio familiare, composto tra l’altro da ragazzi giovani ma anche da due professionisti di alto livello. A gareggiare così si impara molto, si impara ad andare in barca in sicurezza ma anche a regatare in modo competitivo durante un Campionato Europeo”.
