Progettato da Guillaume Verdier, una delle matite più accreditate per i racer oceanici, il JP è un 54 piedi con canting keel pensato per la crocera veloce, anzi velocissima.
Insomma se avete circa 1.600.000 euro da spendere è un pò come mettersi in banchina un IMOCA.
Occhio, nel video, alla cucina/stazione di navigazione che è veramente imperdibile

Sorry ma questo ce lo eravamo proprio perso! Marzo è ora! Sta per cominciare ed a sentire le interviste non promette male!

Partiamo dalle misure:

* Superficie velica da 310mq a 410mq a seconda dell’andatura

Arriviamo alle regole
All MOD 70’ boats shall comply with the one-design rules of Multi One Design S.A.
* Appendages: strict one-design rule, with one spare rudder on each boat. Foil wedges shall be discussed between the first five owners, free renewal.
* Rigging: strict one-design rule. Renewal possibilities shall be defined subsequently with the first five owners.
* Sails: A set of sails to be used for delivery and public relations purposes shall be given to each team purchasing an MOD 70’. This set of sails shall be one-design and valid for three years. Each team purchasing an MOD 70’ shall be supplied with a second set of sails for racing purposes.
* Control of sails replacement: From year y+1 onwards, a system of official stickers (buttons – permanent identification) to be displayed on the sails will be set up. The number of stickers shall be defined upon the racing programme and the first racing seasons.
* On-board electronics and communication/production equipment: strictly one-design. After-sales service with the official MOD 70’ supplier(s). Computer equipment allowed shall be discussed with the first five owners.

In questi giorni ci passa più gente che in Galleria a Milano ma non sempre è clemente come quando fu il turno di Green Dragon. Un’altra storia sarà invece quella di Pachi Rivero e Antoñio Piris che a bordo di Renault impegnati nella Barcelona world race svoltano per terzi il capo. Ecco il comunicato e le loro parole:

The pair were seven miles south-west of the Tierra del Fuego tip at 2045hrs (UTC) this evening, enjoying a benign passage around the formidable Cape. Renault Z.E. was making 6.2 knots in light winds as the duo sailed in the Argentinean late afternoon sun, with a couple of dolphins accompanying their passage out of the Pacific.

While Piris has seen the remote rock twice before, and Rivero rounded it previously during the last Barcelona World Race on Mutua Madrileña, the pair spoke to Barcelona race HQ moments ago of how this rounding will have a special significance. “It’s very special to be there with someone I have known since we were kids – we only first talked about doing the race together a little over a year ago, but it’s really special to be there with him,” commented Toño Piris.

The duo grew up together on the northern coast of Spain in Santander, and first met playing the waves as surfers when they were eight or nine years old. Both hail from families with a sailing habit, and soon swopped their boards for boats, racing against each other in dinghies throughout their youth. As their professional careers developed, they remained close friends and often competed together in crewed races.

Co-skipper Pachi Rivero added: “When you go through the Horn you think about all the people who are special to you and support you like the FNOB and Renault. I am looking forward to telling the kids I have been around the Horn twice now! We won’t be resting and our boat is pretty good going upwind so we will keep pushing to maximsie our advantage.”

Antoñio Piris, known as ‘Talpi’, commented that the pair would need a lot of luck in the Atlantic to hold onto their third place, saying “so much of racing is down to being in the right place at the right time”. This evening fourth placed Neutrogena is 187 miles behind, and making 14 knots after a technically tricky day. Talpi reported :“We are pretty happy with our Pacific leg, and though we pushed hard we’re in good shape because the mode we’ve been sailing in – with a double-reefed main – means we’re not too hard pushed.”

MAPFRE are still slowed in light winds as they fight their way out to the SE after their short halt in the lee of Isla Nueva, to the SE of the entrance to the Beagle Channel, but reports from their team confirm that all is well on board and Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez are recovering after their ordeal. The last report from the boat has Xabi working the boat while Iker recovers from his exertions.
Best estimates are that they stopped for around four hours, from a little after 2130hrs UTC last night. Martinez went to the top of the mast to sort out the problem.

So they have been able to repair the problem themselves and are back on course, but still making less than four knots on this morning’s 0900hrs UTC ranking.

“MAPFRE is sailing again but we are in very light winds, but we are back in the race.” Said Xabi this morning. “These boats don’t forgive you and to make them work at their best you really have to look after them. With the wind and seas we saw yesterday anchoring in Isla Nueva was the best option we had.”

Iker is reported to have attempted to go up the mast some time after Cape Horn, when the seas had abated a bit, but had to return to the deck because it was to risky and he was already being hurt.

Looking at the wind pattern around the area where MAPFRE has been the breezes in the lee of the land drop away to 6-7 knots and less in places so they will have some more miles to retrace back out into the prevailing gradient wind.

Ahead there do seem to be some strategic cards to play for the leading duo, and the chance for MAPFRE to make back some of their lost miles. Their next weather obstacle is a high pressure system which will slowly track to the east. To go round to the east of it, downwind offers some risk as the high moves, with the potential to sail more miles, and to be slowed as the centre approaches. The alternative to the west means upwind sailing in light to moderate conditions but then there is the opportunity to tack and use the progressively lifting breeze on the NW side of this anticyclone. But in fact this is a pretty standard weather scenario.

In the medium term the race looks set to get much tighter for third. Renault ZE and to a slightly lesser degree Neutrogena have been slowed as they have dog-legged NE looking to avoid the worst of the void they find themselves facing as the new low bubbles up to their NE, the low to their SW and the high behind them. So Renault ZE have been slow over the last period compared with Estrella Damm and Groupe Bel behind them.

In fact the two red devils behind can look for a relatively straight passage to the horn, catching up some miles, to the point that we might predict the third to seventh placed boats all rounding Cape Horn within 24 hours, with Renaualt ZE Sailing Team presently expected on Monday evening.

Still straightforward conditions for Hugo Boss and GAES making 16.9 and 14.5kts averages just over the last 5 hours.

L’Horn è sempre il Capo

Dovrebbe andare in copy&paste ma quando in un giro del mondo i primi due si presentano ad otto ore di distanza di fronte al Capo, ci si aspetta un gran finale in quello che può essere un sprint atlantico di 7000 miglia, drizza randa di Mapfre permettendo!

At 1020hrs this Thursday morning Jean-Pierre Dick and Loïck Peyron on Virbac-Paprec 3 lead the Barcelona World Race fleet past Cape Horn only four hours and 20 minutes ahead of Spain’s double Olympic medallists Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez. With just under 7000 miles to sail to the finish in Barcelona, the lead of Virbac-Paprec 3 was only 72 miles.

Since their enforced 48 hours pit-stop in Wellington to replace essential mainsail batten-cars, Virbac-Paprec 3 crossed the remainder of the Pacific to Cape Horn in 15 days 1 hour and 35 minutes, their aggregate time since leaving the start line on 31st December of 61 days 22 hours 20 minutes.

MAPFRE’s passage time of 12 days 08hours and 20 minutes not only ensures that the Spanish pair have set the bar very high as the time to beat for the fourth of the race’s ocean trophies, but the hard driving pair have surpassed the record from the inaugural edition of the race of 14d 00h 31m for the 4270 miles passage which was set by Pachi Rivero and Javier ‘Bubi’ Sanso on Mutua Madrileña.

With the iconic rock diminishing in size in their wake Dick and Peyron were joined live on today’s Visio-Conference. Their passage of the Cape in strong Westerly winds required them to pass ‘very, very close’ as they sought some respite from the very challenging conditions thrown up by the low pressure system which was formerly cyclone Atu. For the French duo, their pleasure and satisfaction was doubled as both had individually failed to reach Cape Horn on their 2008-9 Vendée Globe solo passages. Dick described it as a certain ‘revenge’. But both pairs have fought a stunning dog-fight at a furious pace across the Pacific which is likely to continue on the climb up the Atlantic.

Dick said: “It is a great day, one of the magical days in your life, all happiness today to be with Loick passing Cape Horn. The weather has been rough last night with more than 35 knots of wind, and the waves were very impressive we were pitching right into them so it was difficult with the wind. We did not know how much we how much sail to set, so we tried to do our best to keep up the speed but not risk the boat too much, so we seem to have succeeded with Cape Horn this morning.”

MAPFRE’s Xabi Fernandez was perhaps slightly more subdued: focused, determined but very clearly content to be passing in second place, particularly in contrast to his previous passages of Cape Horn on their last two Volvo Ocean Races. On Movistar, five years ago today to the day, they were fighting a technical problem with the keel which saw them stopping into Ushuaia, while in the last edition of the race on Telefonica they had a rig problem which meant they were in last place:

“ It is good to start pointing north. I don’t think there is going to be big changes in the weather, there are some squalls around so we have to be alert and ready to put reefs up and down, but we have to go fast. Now Virbac is going to do a lot of miles now. They are going to be very, very fast.

I think this so far is the best time. We had quite a lot of problems on the boats before. Movistar and Telefonica Blue we had broken pieces, we were last which was not very nice. But this time we are good and good in the race, so we are very happy. It is good to be here and to be pointing north into better weather. Rounding together with Iker is special especially arriving here in second place. So it is a very good moment.” Said Fernandez.

The Pacific is behind them, but the battle of the Atlantic is just starting. As yet unknown is how the two will compare in upwind conditions which often prevail on this ascent, but the first obstacle previewed is a high pressure system developing off the Argentine and Uruguayan coast.
