Adesso si che il gioco è come lo Vogliamo, o meglio al posto del “Rosso outsider” Rougarou pensavamo ci fosse Bliksem, ma mentre il primo plana sulla sua settimana “Benedetta”, il Campione del Mondo affonda nella sua settimana “Maledetta” lasciando spazio ai tre protagonisti annunciati sin dalla vigilia.

B-Lin con un concreto 6-4 mantiene la vetta e tampona l’attacco perentorio operato da Full Throttle che con due regate superlative 4-2 si porta a due punti, dietro di il duo di testa Star, ieri 1-10, sembra avere più cartucce da sparare rispetto a Rougarou (8-6) e non solo per il podio. Con due regate da disputare i 12 punti che separano Ecklund and Co. dalla vetta sembrano tanti, ma in acqua diventeranno pochissimi.

Certo è che ieri B-Lin ha perso un paio di occasioni d’oro per mettere più fieno in cascina, perdendo qualche posizione nell’arrivo in volata della prima prova e facendosi passare da FT nel corso della seconda, ma non pretendiamo troppo, mantenere questi risultati è sinonimo di concentrazione e esperienza, difficilmente immaginabili da Luca Lalli che ricordiamo essere un roukie al suo primo anno sul Melges 32, anzi al suo primo anno al timone di una barca con più di 3 persone di equipaggio…

Sarà una lotta stupenda, che vedrà coinvolti gli equipaggi protagonisti non solo dal punto prettamente agonistico ma anche da quello umano. Il rapporto che unisce la Famiglia Porter a Fred Michetti va ben oltre l’amicizia. Fred è uno di casa per i Porter ed è colui che ha portato Jono Mc Kee a bordo di FT. Carlo e Fred hanno regatato a Miami su FT, insegnando ai figli dell’”Admiral” come si manovra sul M32. Su Star c’è il “Grande Capo” Henry Melges con lui il Nat Wilmott, il solo “reduce” dei Bliksem Campioni del Mondo che potrebbe ancora riuscire a difendere il titolo conquistato un anno fa.

Non dobbiamo dimenticarci del Melges24, Uka Uka vince il mondiale di Tallin con Fred, Rufo e Jono davanti proprio a Henry Melges, che non ne potrà più di vedersi il Suo “uomo europeo” che gli rovina sempre la festa.

Il piatto è servito non resta che vedere con che “mano” scenderanno in campo i protagonisti. Vedremo se Luca Lalli riuscirà a dominare l’emozione, se a vincere sarà l’esperienza di Porter e Ecklund oppure se sarà il “Rosso Relativo” di Rougarou che coronerà la settimana di grazia con qualcosa di importante.

E Adesso Vela, godiamoci lo spettacolo…

Melges 32 World Championship, B-lin ancora in vetta

Conclusa la ottava prova, seconda di giornata, a due prove dal termine B lin (oggi un 7 e un 4) è ancora in testa per due punti.
Si allontana Rougarou (oggi 8 e 6) ma si avvicina Full Throttle (oggi 4 e 2).
La linea conservativa di B-lin sembra pagare, grande regolarità e molta concetrazione.
Prima prova con vittoria per Star (secondo Bullet) e seconda per Ramrod (oggi 3 e 1 )

La sensazione è che sia ormai un testa-testa tra gli equipaggi di Lalli e Porter, con Lovell ed Eckund a contendersi il podio.

Ma sempre e comunque…..Forza Ragazzi!

“For the Melges 32 competitors racing at the 2010 Rolex Big Boat Series, the event has been mostly regarded as a four day training and experimentation session before their 2010 World Championship which takes place here in San Francisco next week. Based on the closeness of the racing this week, the world title is very much up for grabs and the list of teams with the potential to win is a long one.

If the results from the Big Boat Series tell us anything, then it is that no single team has any discernable speed, boat-handling or tactical edge over the rest. This is borne out by the fact that six of the seven races has seen a different winner and we can reasonably expect the a similar spread of winners for the Worlds too.

That said, each of the top three finishers at BBS must go into the World Championship as the marginal favourites. Certainly series winner Luca Lalli (ITA) on the helm of B-Lin Sailing has looked both fast and composed throughout the racing so far and was the only helm to win two races. Backing up his clear natural talent as a driver, Lalli has a very strong and experienced crew which includes the combined skills of Lorenzo Bressani, Flavio Favini and Federico Michetti, who between them have won six individual Melges 24 world titles. Significantly B-Lin have consistently proved that they have both the speed and brainpower to dig themselves out of deep first mark roundings and they will without doubt be major contenders next week.

Reigning World Champions Bliksem have been taking their preparations to defend their title very seriously. They arrived in San Francisco some two weeks prior to the BBS and have been putting in the hard yards to get themselves fully honed. Perhaps due to some experimentation with sails and rig settings their performance so far has been up and down, but nobody here has any illusions that Pieter Taselaar and his boys have the ability to pull off the World Championship double.

European Champions Red, have clocked up some equally inconsistent results so far but their comprehensive win in the first race of the event gives a big clue to the real potential of Joe Woods’s team and we can expect them to come on strong during the Worlds.

Jeff Ecklund on Star and John Porter on Full Throttle have both shown excellent boatspeed this week and it is well within the capability of each of them to win races and even string together a World Championship winning series.

Much will depend on the weather conditions in play in San Francisco next week when racing gets underway. If the predominantly light to medium breezes are replaced by the more traditional twenty knot plus winds then we can expect to see teams like Phillipe Kahn’s PegasusMotionX and John Kilroy’s Samba Pa-Ti come into play too.

Racing for the 2010 Melges 32 World Championship starts on Wednesday and Offshore Rules will of course be out on the water throughout the series to bring you the very best of the video action and sailor interviews each day. It is going to be a fantastic regatta so we hope you will check back regularly for the latest updates.

Big Boat Series – Day One

Ladys and Gentlement barche in acqua nella Frisco Bay, con un nebbione “de paiura”, sono iniziate le operazioni per la “Battaglia Navale” prevista per la prossima settimana e immadiate sono partite le prime due “CANNONATE”.

La prima l’ha presa Gombay Smash che esordisce nella classe Melges32 con una “cilindrata” di Team Barbarians al primo giro di boa. (Vedi foto)

La seconda la piazzano gli “alcolisti anonimi” nonchè Campioni del Mondo in Carica di Bliksem che con un secco e prentorio 2-1 mettono d’accordo tutti su chi sia l’equipaggio da battere.

I nostri, o meglio IL NOSTRO perchè a rappresentare il tricolore c’è solo B-Lin di Luca Lalli, non stanno certo a guardare e con un ottimo 5-3 mettono la prua sul secondo posto in generale.

Le Big Boat Series rappresentano per gli americani un evento importante, quindi i risultati di queste regate potrebbero essere molto più veritieri rispetto a un “Pre World” classico. Staremo a vedere nel mentre è presto per qualsiasi valutazione sul resto della flotta, che vede nei primi gran parte degli equipaggi più attesi, 4° Red (1-12), 6° Star (13-2), 7° Warpath (11-4). Fa notizia la falsa partenza di Full Throttle (8-24) che ci ha abituato però a grandi rimonte.

Day One Down, Three to Go

Though today’s two opening races at the 46th annual Rolex Big Boat Series were partly shrouded in fog, it did nothing to dampen the spirits–or dogged competition–among 98 teams competing on San Francisco Bay. Over 1000 sailors have converged on St. Francis Yacht Club for the four-day event, and they include world champions, America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race veterans as well as California’s top names in sailing. The IRC divison—with 25 boats–is split into four classes, while the 73 teams in One Design division are divided into five classes: Melges 32s, J/105, J/120, Express 37 and One Design 35.

Pieter Taselaar’s (Scarsdale, N.Y.) Bliksem, the 2009 Melges 32 world champion, showed its winning ways when it posted a 1-2 today in what is serving as the 2010 Melges 32 Pre-Worlds. (Twenty-seven of the 32 teams expected to compete next week at the World Championship are on the line.) “We had a really good fight back in the first race after a bad start,” said Bliksem’s pit man Mike Coxson (Sydney Australia). “In the second race, we hit the first couple shifts just right and then we had Alcatraz (island) in the middle and had to decide ‘do we go left or right?’ We were happy to go right and when we saw some of the local boats do the same we knew that was a good sign.” Coxson said the fog made it difficult to find lay lines but the 12-17 knots balanced that difficulty with “good fun on the downwind legs,” of which they had two on twice-around windward leeward courses, each between 10 and 12 miles.

It was a tough day for Doug Douglass’s Goombay Smash who suffered damage during a T-bone incident with Stuart Simpson’s Team Barbarians at the weather mark in the first race. A simple port-starboard incident left the hot-to-trot “Smashers” limping into the harbor with a nasty gash, but with repairs, the boat is expected back in circulation tomorrow.
