Mascalzone Latino Audi Team vince la Key West race week

Si è conclusa oggi nelle acque di Key West, in Florida, la Key West Race Week 2011. Tre le prove disputate con vento da Sud di intensità variabile tra i 5 e gli 8 nodi.

Grande prestazione di Mascalzone Latino Audi Team e del suo Patron Vincenzo Onorato, il quale, al meglio delle dieci prove, ha conquistato per le terza volta in carriera la Key West Week. La concorrenza era agguerrita, e sino all’ultimo lato dell’ultima regata tutto era ancora possibile.

I Mascalzoni hanno ottenuto quattro primi, due secondi, tre terzi e un quinto posto. Risultati che hanno consentito loro di concludere la serie davanti a tutti, a pari punti con Team Aqua di Don Wilson, con Cameron Appleton alla tattica, e un punto davanti a ORACLE Racing, con alla tattica Russell Coutts. La parità è stata risolta a favore di Mascalzone Latino Audi Team tenendo conto dei migliori risultati: quattro primi posti per il team italiano contro i tre di quello degli Emirati.

All’alba delle ultime regate Mascalzone Latino Audi Team era sotto di un punto rispetto al leader della classifica generale provvisoria, Team Aqua, mentre ORACLE Racing si trovava dietro di una sola lunghezza.

Oggi era la giornata decisiva. Molta concentrazione e la consapevolezza che non manca nulla per vincere ancora in questa classe: la velocità c’è e l’equipaggio pure.

Nella prima delle ultime tre prove disputate Mascalzone Latino Audi Team ha cominciato con il piede giusto, cogliendo un ottimo primo posto e dominando la regata dall’inizio alla fine. A questo punto il team di Vincenzo Onorato, con il palermitano Francesco Bruni alla tattica, era il nuovo leader della classifica, ma di un solo punto.

Nella nona prova però i Mascalzoni sono partiti male, “impacchettati” tra due barche e costretti a virare ed eleggere la parte del campo meno favorevole. Purtroppo tale scelta si è rivelata decisiva e a nulla sono valsi gli sforzi fatti per recuperare. Per di più, a far si che il distacco con gli avversari diventasse incolmabile, ci si è messa anche una rete da pesca, complice di un’ulteriore perdita di terreno.

La penultima regata viene perciò vinta da Team Aqua, capace di riprendersi nuovamente la leadership provvisoria, davanti agli americani di Ironbound e ORACLE Racing. Mascalzone Latino è quinto.

Dopo pochi minuti, infine, suona la partenza della decima e ultima prova: o la va o la spacca. La partenza di Mascalzone Latino Audi Team non è nuovamente delle migliori e la posizione assunta costringe il tattico Francesco Bruni a chiamare la virata. I Mascalzoni sfilano a poppa degli avversari e dopo un paio di virate si portano sul lato sinistro del campo di regata. Azzardano, sanno che non ci saranno altre occasioni. ORACLE e Team Aqua sono sulla destra e si tengono d’occhio l’un l’altro.

Poco dopo aver superato metà del primo lato di bolina le barche vanno al fatidico incrocio. La separazione raggiunta è notevole e i minuti che precedono l’incrocio sembrano essere delle ore. Arriva il momento della verità: Mascalzone è comodamente davanti a tutti. Un vantaggio che però non basta: per vincere è necessario che tra Mascalzone Latino e Team Aqua si frapponga un altro scafo.

Purtroppo, lato dopo lato, mentre Mascalzone è protagonista di una cavalcata solitaria, Team Aqua recupera posizioni e a metà della seconda bolina è secondo. Bruni se ne accorge, ordina al suo timoniere di poggiare e cercare di andare a “sporcare” il vento ad Appleton, con la speranza che ORACLE riesca a sopravanzarlo.

Un’ottima intuizione trasformata in un lavoro da manuale. Aqua, nonostante fosse già in layline, è costretto a una virata in più del previsto, lasciando sfilare ORACLE.

Mascalzone Latino Audi Team archivia quindi con autorevolezza la prova, davanti a ORACLE Racing e Team Aqua.

“È una grande soddisfazione vincere contro avversari di questa portata –commenta Vincenzo Onorato– oggi è stata una giornata difficile, ma nel momento della verità abbiamo tirato fuori le unghie. Ed è la prima volta che mi succede che navigando di bolina il mio tattico mi dica di strambare, invece che virare. Ma lo rifarei: si è rivelata la manovra decisiva! Bravi ragazzi!”

In barca con l’armatore napoletano oltre a Bruni hanno regatato Andrea Ballico e Matteo Savelli alle scotte, Paul”Flipper” Westlake alla randa, Simone de Mari all’albero, Iztok Knafelc come grinder e Davide “Manolo”Scarpa a prua.

ORACLE RC 44 MIAMI CUP – The winner is Mascalzone

Mascalzone chiude in bellezza il 2010 con la vittoria a Miami nella tappa del circuito degli RC44. Terzo nelle regate di flotta e terzo nei match gli assicurano la gloria.

Il circuito 2010 è invece ad appannaggio dei cugini di Oracle……vabbè diciamolo, hanno fatto tutto in famiglia, AC Tragedy compresa!
Un plauso ai Mascalzoni: Vincenzo Onorato, al timone, Francesco Bruni, alla tattica, Andrea Ballico e Matteo Savelli alle scotte, Paul Westlake alla randa, Simone De Mari alle drizze, Luca Faravelli come grinder e Davide scarpa come prodiere.
Qui invece il commento del capo tratto dal loro sito ufficiale: “È stata una grande settimana dopo un anno particolarmente difficile. Devo dire che personalmente è stato straordinario questo ritorno alla vittoria dopo aver fatto solo tre regate in tutto il 2010. Con così poco allenamento ci ha aiutato anche la fortuna, ma il successo è dovuto sopratutto alla grossa mano che ho avuto da Francesco “Checco” Bruni e da tutto l’equipaggio. Sono felice infine di aver chiuso l’evento con un così bel risultato e con degli ottimi piazzamenti, ottenuti in particolare nei giorni di grande vento, come oggi. È con condizioni impegnative, oltre i 20/25 nodi, che mi diverto e ottengo le migliori performance.”

February 9, 2010 – The RC 44 Class Association announces a new and exciting program, as well as updated rules for the fourth edition of its Championship Tour.

The season will start in two weeks in Dubai with the Al Maktoum Sailing Trophy (February 22 – 27). The fleet will then be transported to central Europe for the Austria Cup (29 April – 4 May), the Copenhagen Cup (8 – 3 June) and a fourth venue to be confirmed soon. The Championship Tour will then move back to the Atlantic Ocean for the RC 44 Puerto Calero Islas Canarias Cup, which will also be the RC 44 World Championship (11 – 16 October), before the season showdown (7 – 12 December).

The teams involved in the Championship Tour 2010 include Team No Way Back (Pieter Heerema / Ray Davies), Artemis (Torbjorn Tornqvist / Terry Hutchinson), CEEREF (Igor Lah / Rod Davis), BMW ORACLE Racing (Larry Ellison / Russell Coutts), Team Aqua (Chris Bake / Cameron Appleton), Organika (Maciej Nawrocki / Karol Jablonski), Team Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (José Juan and Daniel Calero / José Maria Ponce), Katusha (Paul Cayard), Team Sea Dubai (Raimondo Tonelli / Markus Wieser), Team Austria (René Mangold / Christian Binder) and Team Jelik (Frank Pong). The RC 44 Championship Tour is one of the world’s top sailing events, and other teams are expected to join the Class throughout the season.

Several rules have been updated in order to increase the appeal of the Class. For example, the events will now begin with the match race event on day 1 & 2. The third day will be a fleet race practice day as well as a spare day to conclude the match race if necessary. The fleet regatta will take place on day 4, 5 and 6. The long distance regatta is maintained; however it will only take place if an interesting race course is available. As for the points, they will not count double as was the case in the previous years. An official RC 44 World Championship will also take place for the first time in Lanzarote; it will break the possible ties in the annual rankings.

Organised by Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), the Al Maktoum Sailing Trophy will be the season opener on February 22 – 27. The regatta will reassemble nine out of the ten RC 44’s who competed in last year’s Gold Cup. Amongst the favourites, Pieter Heerema and Ray Davies (Team No Way Back) will be keen to confirm the title they conquered during the Gold Cup 2009. As for Terry Hutchinson, who joins the RC 44 Class for the first time on board Artemis, he will be keen to match the brilliant results obtained by Dean Barker last year with this team.

Unable to attend the event due to the America’s Cup, Larry Ellison and Russell Coutts will be replaced by Mike Perris (fleet race helmsman) and Adam Minoprio (match race helmsman). Needless to say that Ceeref, the winner of the SLAM Cup 2009 – the match race season title – will have an interesting challenge against the winner of last year’s World Match Race Tour Adam Minoprio and that the comparison will be interesting.

Siccome Antonello è un amico e sempre il primo a farci i complimenti quando scriviamo qualcosa che gli piace volevamo dirgli che questo scoop è un gran colpo e siamo contenti l’abbia fatto lui.

A noi non resta che notare che, quest’anno, dalla città di Sant’Efisio passeranno Melges 20, Melges 24, Melges 32, Farr 40, RC 44 e TP 52.

The RC 44 Championship Tour 2009 will start in Puerto Calero (Canary Islands, Spain), on February 25. It will then take the fleet to Cagliari (ITA), Gmunden (AUS), Malcesine (Lake Garda, ITA), the South of France and Dubai.
February 10, 2009 – The RC 44 Class launches its third season with the support of DHL (official logistics partner), BMW (official car) and SLAM (official clothes).
The Championship Tour 2009 will comprise six different regattas held in five different countries (Spain, Italy, Austria, France and the UAE).
World renowned teams and sailors will once again participate in the tour, making it one of the world’s prime sailing events. The list includes Torbjorn Tornqvist / Dean Barker (Artemis), Chris Bake / Cameron Appleton (Team Aqua), Stéphane Kandler / Sébastien Col (K-Challenge), Russell Coutts (BMW ORACLE Racing), Maciej Nawrocki / Karol Jablonski (Team Organika), Pieter Heerema / Philippe Presti, Igor Lah / James Spithill (Ceeref), Daniel and Jose Calero, Luis Doreste and many more.
The main features of the RC 44 Championship Tour are the logistical support brought to the teams, the quality of the venues, the level of hospitality and, of course, the one-design and unique pro driver / owner-driver – match race / fleet race concept.
“Our focus is on the teams”, comments Class manager Bertrand Favre. “Our goal is to support them as well as we can, for example by coordinating the transport of the boats, announcing the dates and venues a long time ahead, and providing an exciting program both on the water and on land.”
Indeed, the RC 44 Class provides a strong logistical and financial support to the teams. For examples, the custom paperwork are facilitated and accelerated, the shipments are organised, and sometimes financed. The boat owners, the sponsors and the guests of the Class also benefit from a free BMW shuttle service, for example from the airport or to a restaurant.
The season’s first regatta will take place in two weeks. Organised by Puerto Calero, a superb real estate development on Lanzarote’s seafront, the Puerto Calero Islas Canarias RC 44 Cup will begin on Wednesday February 25 with the match racing event. After a full round robin held in two days, the team owners will take (or keep) the helm for three days of fleet racing. The DHL Trophy regatta will take place on Sunday; it will count for double points. The winner of this race will be awarded with the DHL Trophy, whilst the points of the regatta will be incorporated in the fleet race ranking.
The season champions will be crowned on November 29 in Dubai, at the end of the RC 44 Gold Cup. For the first time, the Gold Cup will count double, making it a must-attend regatta for all the teams.
With six international regattas, some of the world’s best sailors and new teams joining the Class, the third RC 44 Championship Tour will be one of sailing’s top international events in 2009.

E’ Banco Espirito Santo il vincitore del circuito 2008 degli RC 44.
Si laurea campione a Puerto Calero dove la Gold Cup è stata letteralmente dominata da Team Cereef di Igor Lah con James Spithill alla tattica.
Il team di Patrick de Barros, che vantava Russel Coutts ai ragionamenti, fa tesoro dell’assenza di Team Hiorshi – Città di Milano per superarlo nel rush finale.
La classe nonostante l’arrivo di nuovi armatori sembra aver difficoltà a crescere, in questa tappa sono scese in mare solo 6 imbarcazioni.
Anche per loro il 2009 sarà un corcevia importante.

Lanzarote, December 14 2008 – Having dominated proceedings all week in the Puerto Calero RC44 Gold Cup, Igor Lah nearly let victory slip from his grasp as Team Ceeref struggled to make sense of the big windshifts that tumbled off the mountains of Lanzarote in gusts that sometimes blew up to 27 knots.
Meanwhile the Slovenian’s closest rival – both at this event and for overall honours in the 2008 RC44 fleet racing season – was having a much better time in the tricky, puffy conditions. Owner of Banco Espirito Santo, Patrick de Barros credited Russell Coutts for making sense of the 40 degree shifts as the Portuguese boat picked up a 1,2 in the first two heats while Team Ceeref struggled with a 3,4.
The Portuguese were now within striking distance of the Slovenians for winning the event in Lanzarote, and were looking more secure in the defence of their lead in the 2008 rankings. Going into today, de Barros held a slim 3-point advantage over Lah in the season points scoreboard, and Ceeref had been the class act of the past week. Now de Barros had a bit more breathing room, and if he could win the final race with Ceeref last then perhaps he could steal the Gold Cup trophy too. With the strength and variable direction of the northerly wind, anything was possible.
Unfortunately Artemis had to bow out of the final race as keel problems forced Torbjorn Tornqvist to head home early. The battle for the remaining five boats was intense, with the whole fleet nose to tail at the leeward mark. Islas Canarias Puerto Calero led round that mark and while the other four boats tacked inshore, Daniel Calero kept on driving out to the right. When Calero tacked back to converge with the fleet, he was well ahead. The local spectators were getting excited at the prospect of a surprise win by a young and inexperienced team over some of the best professional sailors in the world.
The Canaries crew sailed a beautiful beat to lead handsomely around the final windward mark. However the chasing pack poured down behind them in a huge gust. At this stage Team Ceeref was way back in last place, and looked in danger of losing the Gold Cup if Banco could find their way through to first. But Ceeref tactician James Spithill called for an early gybe with the new breeze as the Slovenian boat hit 22 knots boatspeed in a gust of 27 knots. BMW ORACLE Racing was next to gybe and these two boats were locked in a high-speed battle for the lead. Ceeref prevailed, surging across the finish line in first place and securing victory in Lanzarote, to go with their match racing victory three days earlier.
Banco Espirito Santo was second in the fleet racing, followed by Team Aqua who edged third place by just a point from BMW ORACLE Racing.
Any disappointment that Patrick de Barros had for not winning the Puerto Calero RC44 Gold Cup was easily compensated for by his season victory. And Daniel Calero was happy despite having lost that last race which seemed to have been his. He is hugely encouraged by his team’s progress over the past week, and will be training harder than any team in the two months before the fleet returns to Lanzarote in late February.

La tappa di Trieste non verrà ricordata come una delle più eccitanti disputata dagli RC 44.
Il video però, che l’ufficio stampa della classe ha postato su You Tube , è molto ben fatto e rende onore alla Barcolana.

Il ragazzo dal timone d'oro

Team Hiroshi – Città di Milano vince la RC 44 Malcesine Slam Cup.
Oggi a Malcesine non si è regatato per assenza di vento e Peter Reggio è stato costretto a dichiarare l’evento concluso alle 14.45
La tappa rimane valida grazie alle quattro prove di flotta disputate e la classifica rimane quella di ieri che, appunto, vedeva Hiroshi davanti a Banco Espirito Santo, Team Ceeref e Team Sea Dubai.

Terza vittoria della stagione per Armando Giulietti che si è trovato bene con le ruote d’oro montate ad inizio stagione dopo il successo di Dubai.
Pare che non le voglia restituire fino al termine del campionato…

Cosa c’è in acqua?

RC 44 a Malcesine, regate di Match Race già in corso, 9 barche che partecipano (pochine). Hiroshi Città di Milano di Armando Giulietti è impegnato a difendere la “ruota d’oro” (il leader della classifca degli RC si vede consegnare una vera e propria ruota del timone in oro, scicchissimi!!).

Melges 32 a Cala de Medici ospitati in quello che molti ritengono il porto turistico più bello d’Italia. 12 barche che partecipano (anche qui pensavamo di più) ma ne rimangono a terra almeno quattro per sovrapposizioni di calendario (si sono già 16 i Melges 32 che navigano in Italia). Matrix di Luigi Melegari con Matteo Ivaldi alla tattica è impegnato a difendere il numero rosso di prua (il leader della classifca dei M32 ha il numero di prua rosso invece che nero).

J 80 a Kiel per il loro mondiale. 64 barche al via che, come aperitivo, si sono beccate ben 4 prove nella prima giornata. Solo due italiani iscritti di cui uno in realtà potrebbe non essere della partita (4 DNC fanno pensare che le ferie abbia deciso di farle altrove). Il tricolore sventola su Jeniale, 18esimo dopo 4 prove.
Insomma flotta folta ma nessuno sbarco previsto in Italia nel breve.

GP 42 a Valencia per la terza tappa della Quebramar Cup. Airis di Roberto Monti con Sandro Montefusco al timone e Roberto Benamati alla tattica vuole vincere ancora in casa dei “nemici” spagnoli. La flotta non ha grandi numeri (normalmente al via 7 – 8 barche) ma il livello è decisamente alto.

Riflessione:
Ma non è che il movimento soffre un pò di sindrome da “frammentazione”.
