Era quasi fatta e mancava solo l’ultimo tassello per conquistare la corona. Lorenzo Bressani e il suo team non si sono fatti pregare e nella prima regata di giornata hanno archiviato la pratica: il 3° posto è stato abbondantemente sufficiente per chiudere la partita e portare a casa il terzo titolo mondiale Melges 24, impresa mai riuscita prima a nessun timoniere in questa difficile e competitiva classe. Uka Uka Racing ci è riuscito anche nel 2008 (a Porto Cervo) e nel 2010 (a Tallin), confermandosi quindi il massimo esperto mondiale di questa difficile specialità.
La Classe continua ad attirare campioni olimpici e velisti con esperienza di Coppa America e Volvo Ocean Race, come testimoniano i curricula di tanti velisti qui a Corpus Christi. “Le condizioni meteo impegnative del Texas si sono rivelate per noi ottimali – dichiara Lorenzo “Rufo” Bressani finalmente rilassato –. Nelle giornate di allenamento ero un po’ preoccupato, perché con aria debole era difficile per noi ingranare la marcia giusta. Poi il vento è salito e ci ha assistito per tutto il campionato, mettendoci a nostro
agio.
Si sapeva che il meteo di Corpus Christi avrebbe dato vita ad un campionato ventoso e quindi impegnativo, anche se la località ha
penalizzato soprattutto gli equipaggi americani, che non considerano il Texas una delle loro località preferite per fare regate.
Sono mancate quindi diverse barche, in particolare quelle di metà classifica – continua il campione triestino –, però i primi 10 erano
equipaggi di valore e hanno combattuto molto. Sono certo che l’anno prossimo al mondiale italiano si tornerà sopra le 100 barche. A mio parere questa è una delle classi più divertenti e impegnative che ci siano oggi.
Un grazie speciale va a Vince Brun della Veleria North Sails, che ha messo in campo tutta la sua esperienza per prepararci al meglio a
questo appuntamento”. Dietro a Bressani completano il podio l’americano Brian Porter su Full Throttle e l’australiano (con bandiera irlandese) Nathan Wilmot su Embarr (Wilmott è campione olimpico 470 in carica).
“Sono veramente orgoglioso di questa vittoria e di questo team”, dichiara l’appassionato armatore civitanovese Lorenzo Santini, che
in pochissimi anni si è impegnato e ha lavorato tantissimo per mettere a disposizione di Uka Uka Racing le risorse necessarie per vincere questi campionati. “Ringrazio i ragazzi e gli sponsor che credono in noi, i nostri fan e tutti coloro che ci sono stati vicino in queste imprese”.
Un altro elemento fondamentale del team è Federico Michetti, tailer a bordo e bravissimo team manager a terra, che è riuscito a creare e a gestire una “macchina da guerra” infallibile.
“Questo risultato è il coronamento di un grande lavoro e di un gruppo che riesce a dare il massimo in ogni condizione”.Da non dimenticare che MIchetti è l’unico velista al mondo ad aver vinto 4 titoli mondiali Melges 24, avendo anche conquistato l’oro con il
compianto Giorgio Zuccoli nel 2000.
Qui a Corpus Christi si è rivelata fondamentale la tattica e miglior scelta non avrebbe potuto essere quella di Jonathan McKee, uno dei
velisti americani che hanno scritto le pagine più belle di questo sport per gli USA (vittorie olimpiche e giro del mondo inclusi, oltre a vari mondiali in diverse Classi). “E’ stato un campionato in cui due sono stati gli elementi fondamentali: la velocità della barca e la difficoltà fisica. Siamo veramente provati da questa competizione, ma ovviamente molto felici. Abbiamo fatto pochissimi errori e portiamo a casa un risultato strepitoso”.
Della fatica di questo mondiale ne sa qualcosa anche il funanbolo di bordo, il prodiere abruzzese Fabio Gridelli, che ha lavorato con
grinta e umiltà. “La fatica fisica è stata tanta, però è tutto compensato dalla gioia per questa grande vittoria”.

Vincere un Campionato Mondiale non è da tutti, ma lo fanno in tanti. Venire selezionati per gli ISAF Award annuali è veramente un onore per pochi.
E allora ci inchiniamo a Rufo che è stato nominato tra altri sei fenomeni presi da tutto il mondo.
Del ragazzo ci sarebbe da dire molto e bene, perché non è nuovo ad ottenere dei grandi risultati. Quello che a molti risulta evidente, è che quest’anno aveva una marcia in più e soprattutto la metteva col sorriso! Merito del matrimonio o di situazioni congeniali, chissà. Certo quella furia agonistica, che in passato lo ha magari ostacolato, è stata sostituita da una consapevole maturità che solo i veri campioni hanno.
E allora complimenti a Rufo che con questa Nomination chiude un 2010 davvero sensazionale.
Noi non abbiamo voce in capitolo in queste manifestazioni serie, ma se mai ci domandassero per chi votiamo per il 2010, non avremmo dubbi perchè il 2010 è l’anno di Rufo Bressani!

ISAF received nominations for the 2010 Awards from across the world for sailors representing all aspects of the sport. In deciding the nominees, the achievements of sailors made during the qualifying period of 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 are taken into consideration. There can be only one winner in each of the two categories, male and female, and we are delighted to announce the names of those sailors now vying for the coveted and prestigious 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award.

Male Nominees

Lorenzo Bressani (ITA) – Melges 24 and 32 Champion

The Melges Class has a double champion in Lorenzo Bressani, a star performer in the Melges 24 and the Melges 32. Bressani is the man at the back of Melges Uka Uka Racing and the nomination period began for him with a win at the pre-Worlds in October 2009 and was followed up with sixth place at the Worlds. Adding these results to an already successful season, Bressani claimed first overall on the 2009 World and European ranking series.
The 2010 season began with a win at Key West Race Week and Bressani has posted an unblemished score card since. Key West was followed by the Italian Nationals, the Alghero regatta of the Volvo Cup circuit, the Estonian and Finnish Nationals and finally the big prize, the 2010 Marinepool Melges 24 World Championship sailed in Tallinn, Estonia in August. Bressani also won the world title in 2008 and is one of only two people to have won this title twice.
Bressani’s incredible win rate in the Melges 24 is complemented by his success in the Melges 32 fleet, where he sails B-Lin as tactician. In September 2009, Bressani’s team finished third at the Melges 32 Worlds in Porto Cervo, Italy and finished five of the next regattas on the podium. At two of these Bressani finished first, the Primo Cup Trophée Credit Suisse in Milan and regatta 5 of the Melges 32 sailing series. These results add up to first overall in the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series 2010.
The Melges 32 was also selected as one of the classes at the ISAF Offshore Team World Championship. Bressani and the Italian team finished second overall.
Outside the Melges class, Bressani also sails as helm or tactician on the TP52 Luna Rossa in the Audi Med Cup Circuit and finished second overall at the X41 World Championship.

Antoine Albeau (FRA) – Professional Windsurfing Association & Formula World Champion

Since 1994, Albeau has notched up a staggering eleven world titles across many disciplines and also held the World Speed record at 48.7 knots back in 2008. During the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award nomination period, Albeau won the German leg of the 2009 PWA Tour, his sixth win from seven events, and he was crowned 2009 PWA Slalom World Champion.
In March 2010 he took on the Formula Windsurfing World Championship in Argentina and won that as well. Albeau was almost untouchable in Mendoza, winning seven of the 15 races and ending the series with a 27 net point lead.
Back on the PWA Tour and Albeau flew out of the blocks at the first event in Korea to take a win in May. This was followed by second place in Catalunya, first again in Fuerteventura and then another second at the World Cup event in Alacati, Turkey in August. This impressive achievement hands Albeau the 2010 Overall Slalom title with a regatta to spare, his fourth successive world title in this discipline.
Born in La Rochelle in France, Antoine Albeau was introduced at an early age to windsurfing by his father. Since his first outing at five-years old, using a cut down adult sail so it wasn’t too big for him, Albeau has become one of the most successful windsurfers in the history of the sport.

Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page (AUS) – 470 World Champions and World Cup winners

Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page are at the very top of their game and since they teamed up in 2009 have steadily exerted their authority on the 470 class.
With a gold medal from Beijing and four world titles to his name, Malcolm Page is a formidable crew to have at the front of your boat and since teaming up with Mat Belcher things could hardly be better. They notched up 28 straight race wins across the 2009 Australian summer regatta season and then turned their attention to the ISAF Sailing World Cup and the European season.
Belcher and Page sailed at all seven of the 2009-10 ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas, stood on the podium at five of them and led the Standings from start to finish. Their first victory came at Sail Melbourne in December 2009, followed by silver in Miami, silver at Delta Lloyd and gold at Kieler Woche before a final silver medal at Skandia Sail for Gold. This impressive set of results gave them an unassailable lead on the Standings and in September they were crowned 2009-10 ISAF Sailing World Cup Champions.
Belcher and Page were equally dominant at the 2010 470 World Championship at The Hague in the Netherlands. After an impressive performance, including five race wins, they had secured the gold medal before the Medal Race. Page can now count five 470 World titles and the accolade of ‘most successful male 470 sailor’. On 18 August they also rose to the #1 position on the ISAF Sailing World Rankings.
As well as his commitments to the 470 campaign, Malcolm Page also finds time to sail with the Estate Master Farr 40 team as trimmer. Regatta wins included the Rolex Trophy, the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta, the Rolex Farr 40 pre-World Championship and fourth place at the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in the Dominican Republic. He also is a member of the ISAF Athletes’ Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport Athletes’ Commission.

Franck Cammas (FRA) – Record breaking offshore racer

The lure of the ocean and the coveted Outright Round the World Record and Jules Verne Trophy has seen Franck Cammas fine tune his team and his machine after twice being forced to abandon the dream. In January 2010, he embarked on his latest record attempt aboard his 103-foot trimaran Groupama3. Less than two months later he was back and with a new world record of 48 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes and 52 seconds. Cammas led his nine crew round the official course distance of 21,760 miles at an average speed of 18.76 knots with a top speed of 42 knots. In total, the team sailed 28,523 miles, which amounts to an average speed of 24.6 knots. This phenomenal journey also secured the Indian Ocean Intermediate Record of 8 days, 17 hours and 40 minutes.
From the 103-foot trimaran, Cammas downsized dramatically to the Extreme 40 catamaran, competing on the Extreme 40 Series, before going another hull down to join the record books sailing the monohull Volvo 70, Groupama70. On 23 August, Cammas set out on the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race with a crew of ten, the first real challenge for a team testing the waters for a Volvo Ocean Race campaign. By 29 August, Cammas had another world record, setting a new time for the Round Britain and Ireland of 5 days, 21 hours and 26 minutes.
Cammas has completed 69 races on board Groupama boats, achieving 57 podiums and 31 wins. He has been named the ORMA World Champion six times and is always a formidable adversary, regardless of the challenge. A rigorous, talented, perfectionist Cammas leaves nothing to chance.

Tom Slingsby (AUS) – Laser & Etchells World Champion

Tom Slingsby is an exceptional talent. He began the nomination period with a win at Skandia Sail for Gold 2009 and ended it in exactly the same way at the 2010 regatta. In between Slingsby won virtually every regatta he sailed in. In December 2009, he was back in Australia for the summer season in the Laser winning Sail Sydney and the Australian national title. He also picked up the Etchells national title in January and the Farr 40 national title in March.
Sailing as tactician on the Farr 40 Transfusion, Slingsby guided the team to second overall at the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in the Dominican Republic in April before returning to the Laser and the European circuit of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Slingsby sailed at three of the 2009-10 regattas and won them all: Delta Lloyd, Kieler Woche and Skandia Sail for Gold. He also picked up the bronze medal at the Laser Europeans in Estonia.
Between gold medals in the Laser, Slingsby travelled to Howth in Ireland with his Etchells team of John Bertrand and Andrew Palfrey. The team took charge from the second day of racing and with five race wins from the nine race series, they were able to sit out the final race and still be crowned 2010 World Champions.
The final fling for Slingsby was the Laser World Championship at Hayling Island in the UK and once again the Australian was dominant. He claimed his third Laser world title with a 36-point margin over the silver medallist.

Ed Wright (GBR) – Finn World Champion and double World Cup Winner

Ed Wright is one of the true heavy-hitters of the Finn class who pulls out top performance after top performance. Renowned for being one of the fittest sailors in the fleet, Wright relishes the power of the Finn and the technical challenges of the class.
Having already secured the 2008-2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup overall title, Wright finished the season with a silver at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta. He then kicked off the 2009-2010 series in style, winning his first two regattas: the Rolex Miami OCR and Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. Wright was off the podium in Hyères, finishing sixth, but then travelled to Split Croatia for the Finn Europeans where he took home the silver medal.
Wright finished off the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup with a fourth from Delta Lloyd and fifth from Skandia Sail for Gold, enough to secure his second consecutive ISAF Sailing World Cup overall title, one of only two sailors to achieve this feat.
The primary focus for the Finn fleet in 2010 was the Finn Gold Cup in San Francisco in August. Wright showed his intent at the North American Championship in July by winning the gold medal. Back again in August and Wright barely put a foot wrong. At an event he had come so close to winning on numerous occasions, in 2010 he was not to be denied. After a consistent series he approached the Medal Race with a 13-point lead and powered off the start line to lead from start to finish. The Finn Gold Cup was his and a truly successful season concluded.

The Voting
The winners will be selected by the ISAF Member National Authorities, the national governing bodies for sailing around the world, who are now invited to vote for the one male and one female sailor who they believe most deserves the Award.
The winners will be announced at the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards presentation and dinner, which will take place on Tuesday 9 November 2010. The venue for the event is the Zappeion in Athens, Greece.
Each winner will be presented with the prestigious ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award Trophy and a distinctive Rolex timepiece.

Uka Uka Racing dell’armatore civitanovese Lorenzo Santini, portacolori del Club Vela Porto Civitanova, con a bordo l’inedita coppia composta dai due triestini Lorenzo Bressani, al timone e Vasco Vascotto, alla tattica (sostituto solo per questa occasione di Jonathan Mckee, impossibilitato per motivi familiari a unirsi al team), Fred Michetti alle scotte e Fabio Gridelli a prua stravince la IV tappa della Volvo Cup conclusasi oggi a Numana.
Due le regate disputate oggi con un vento da nord – nord-est tra i 7 ed i 9 nodi. Ancora ottimi risultati da parte del team di Lorenzo Santini che conquista un secondo posto, frutto di un grande recupero, alle spalle di Audi di Riccardo Simoneschi con alla tattica Branco Brcin, ed un primo posto nella prova conclusiva.

Con cinque primi, due secondi ed un terzo posto come peggior risultato Uka Uka Racing si impone con grande autorità la classifica generale, distanziando di ben 15 lunghezze il secondo classificato Hurricane – Murphy & Nye di Paolo Testolin con Alberto Bolzan al timone e Daniele Cassinari alla tattica.
Completa il podio Saetta del Nose Sailing Team con Niccolò Bianchi alla barra distanziato di 19 punti.
Nessun dubbio per l’armatore civitanovese Lorenzo Santini: “Il binomio Bressani-Vascotto ha funzionato alla grande, praticamente perfetto. Chissà, magari potrà anche riproporsi in futuro, l’unico problema sta nel fatto che tra loro parlano solo triestino e noi restiamo tagliati fuori dai discorsi”. Scherza in banchina al termine delle prove dell’ultima giornata ma non nega che “Federico Michetti, team manager di Uka Uka Racing, abbia tirato fuori un asso dalla manica”.

“Sono molto molto soddisfatto – afferma un sorridente Lorenzo Bressani, timoniere di Uka Uka Racing – è stata una tre giorni in cui abbiamo regatato senza commettere errori…scartare come peggior risultato un terzo posto non è un cosa che capita tutti i giorni. Questa di Numana per noi di Uka Uka, è probabilmente l’ultima tappa prima del campionato del mondo. Non credo saremo presenti a Torbole, per l’ultima tappa del circuito. Per noi l’appuntamento è per fine luglio a Tallin, per prendere parte al campionato estone, al pre-worlds e al campionato del mondo.”

“Mi sono divertito moltissimo – ha detto Vasco Vascotto, tattico di Uka Uka Racing – perchè comunque per essere la prima volta sul Melges 24, ho visto un bellissimo clima sia a terra che in mare, e nonostante il Melges 24 sia una barca nata una ventina d’anni fa, ho trovato una classe molto attiva. Meglio di come è andata è difficile, Lorenzo (ndr. Bressani) è partito sempre molto bene, quindi per me è stato più semplice fare al meglio il mio lavoro. Anche nella penultima regata di oggi dopo una prima bolina in cui il vento non ha girato a nostro favore, navigando con tranquillità abbiamo recuperando tanto terreno e posizioni. A me a Numana porta molto bene perchè qui, 27 anni fa, ho vinto il primo campionato italiano nella classe Optimist.”

“Un week end di regate magnifico – dice il team manager e trimmer Federico Michetti – in compagnia di un equipaggio assolutamente speciale. Da oggi, inizia l’approccio al Campionato Mondiale, Tallin arriviamo!”

Numana è un posto fuori dal tempo, nè nord nè sud,  non moderno ma nemmeno antico. Non è l’Adriatico che ti aspetti e ti lascia spiazzato nella sua forma sinuosa, altro che il piatto regolare della romagna. Il centro storico è arrampicato sulla collina, e attorno c’è una natura stupenda, a metà tra le langhe e le colline senesi. Inutili i telefoni cellulari se non in centro ed in campo aperto, wifi raro e caro.  La costa è impervia, suggestiva con spiagge bellissime. �
Il porto è grazioso ma disordinato e un pò caotico, alberghi che si chiamano ancora Meublè e che sembrano pensioni degli anni 70 con gente simpatica e allegra vestita di fiori e pois; in mare c’è sempre onda, in cielo sempre troppe nuvole nere.  Il tempo insomma non è nè bello nè brutto, che palle quest’anno con i Melges 24 si sta sempre vestiti come all’invernale. Speriamo di usare le magliette ed i bermuda del Peraz prima dell’autunno. Per l’occasione ed il luogo ecco che  il Presidente di Classe sfoggia un calzare nautico di spiccato e discutibile gusto retrò:

A livello sportivo dobbiamo celebrare la coppia del momento, che da anni non regatava insieme, la premiata ditta Vasco & Rufo su Uka Uka. Erano anni che non li vedevamo assieme e Vasco è al suo esordio sul Melges 24. Per ora non gli piace: “…mi pare un J24 più moderno” e gli risponde Rufo a nome di tutti: “…te capisi un casso!”.  

Manca Favini, impegnato alla Maddalena, c’è Bolzan su Hurricane e aspettiamo Saetta. Il resto è tutto da succedere e da raccontare.

Sarà proprio qui a Key West, a metà della prossima settimana, che il timoniere di Uka Uka Racing, Lorenzo Bressani, sarà premiato, per la seconda volta nella sua carriera, quale vincitore della Ranking list sia mondiale che europea 2009 (ndr. già vinta nel 2007).
Fatta eccezione per il Campionato del Mondo di Annapolis, nella stagione passata, Bressani e compagni si sono aggiudicati tutti gli appuntamenti a cui hanno partecipato: la Premiere Racing Key West, la Nood Regatta di Annapolis, il Campionato Italiano di classe a Cagliari, la Torbole Week, ultima tappa del circuito Volvo Cup 2009 ed infine il Campionato Europeo di Hyères, in Francia.
Un rullino di marcia impressionante che ha consentito al team di Santini di essere, sino a fine ottobre, il primo team a potersi fregiare del titolo di Campione mondiale, europeo e nazionale in carica.

E come l’anno scorso è dall’appuntamento americano che riparte la nuova avventura dell’Uka Uka Racing che nel mirino mette appunto la Premiere – Racing di Key West.
Successivamente il team si trasferirà poi in Italia per partecipare ai cinque eventi del circuito italiano Volvo Cup, propedeutici per arrivare al top della forma all’appuntamento clou della stagione: il Campionato del Mondo di Tallin, in Estonia, la prima settimana di agosto.

Ventuno gli equipaggi della classe Melges 24 che da lunedì prossimo sino a venerdì si contenderanno l’ambito trofeo, parecchie unità di meno rispetto all’anno passato. Ma “gli ossi duri” non mancano mai: primo fra tutti l’avversario di sempre, Blu Moon di Franco Rossini con al timone Flavio Favini.

“E’ già due giorni – dice il team manager e Deus ex machina del team, Federico Michetti – che usciamo in mare ad allenarci assieme a Blu Moon che è si il nostro principale avversario, ma anche un gruppo di veri amici, sempre molto corretto e sportivo. Stiamo facendo due sedute di allenamento al giorno, una al mattino ed una al pomeriggio, un bel lavoro!”

“Finalmente – afferma il timoniere Lorenzo Bressani – dopo le terribili condizioni meteo trovate ad Annapolis, ultima regata a cui abbiamo preso parte, siamo ritornati ad allenarci con il sole ed il vento. Uno spettacolo! Dopo la brutta parentesi di Annapolis, avevo una gran voglia di ritornare a navigare su questa barca, ad ora una di quelle da cui mi sono tolto le maggiori soddisfazioni della mia carriera.”

Bressani continua dicendo: “E poi cominciare l’anno venendo premiati come vincitore delle ranking mondiale ed europea è un bel inizio. Nel 2007, la prima volta che ho vinto, è stato di buon auspicio per l’anno successivo…speriamo lo sia anche questa volta”.

Lorenzo Santini, armatore di Uka Uka Racing, si presenta a Key West con la seguente formazione: Lorenzo Bressani al timone, Jonathan McKee alla tattica, Federico Michetti team manager e trimmer, Fabio Gridelli in sostituzione dell’infortunata Francesca Prina, prodiere.
